I was surprised to hear from a colleague that I had been called out by US conservative commentator Ben Shapiro in a recent episode of his entertainingly titled show, “Facts.” In it, he seeks to lend credence to the view that the World Economic Forum is a neo-socialist conspiracy aiming to control the world with narratives on climate change, stakeholder capitalism, and cross-sector collaboration. His cherry-picked analysis from my contribution to The Great Narrative - the book by the founder of the World Economic Forum, Klaus Schwab - argued that I supported “lowered living standards, enforced by government, hand-in-glove with corporations.” (This starts at the 6:15 mark for those interested). It is the first time I have heard my views on development described as 'governments colluding with corporations' - ironically, I am more often accused of entirely the opposite. Upon hearing this I thought to myself: you know you have hit a nerve when the American right-wing uses you to prove a conspiracy theory. I shared this with a few friends and most said, "Congrats." Granted, WEF is widely regarded as elitist. But, hand on heart, I can say I’ve seen no plans for maniacal world domination during my stints there. And to be clear, my involvement with the WEF has not been as a corporate tycoon but as an individual invited to offer views on specific topics - often contrarian. The WEF is also distinctly capitalist in its positioning – not socialist – and although it is very vocal about putting the well-being of people and the planet first, it regularly falls short of being more than a performative networking event. I wonder, however, if Shapiro would espouse the same view if the WEF were an American entity. Perhaps the WEF’s “do as I say, not as I do” rhetoric would be more attractive if it were domestic? Truthfully, I only heard about Shapiro a month ago, but not watched a single video of his before this. I would like to extend a warm invitation to him to come to Asia for a discussion on the pressing issues of our time. It could be in Hong Kong or Kuala Lumpur. We could break bread: kosher/halal/Brahman. It needn't be confrontational, and I am sure it will rake in views – which is surely appealing to the eyeball-hungry American media machine and its penchant for disregarding “Facts.” If anyone knows how to contact him, do let me know. Countries from India to Mexico to the U.S. are increasingly aware of the toll extreme temperatures are having on people’s health, livelihoods and local economies. But each faces its own challenges in responding, including a lack of money, resources or policies to ensure rising demands for energy to cool homes and businesses don’t add to climate-warming emissions. As climate change makes heat waves more frequent, people can be left feeling helpless. But there’s good news to combat these rising temperatures, in the form of a tree. We know trees won't singlehandedly solve our climate challenges. But they just might be the simplest, most powerful tool at our disposal if we consider what a tree can be. https://lnkd.in/gsTXGDnW

This message is not pretty, but oh so urgent. We should feel depressed because life in all its forms is beautiful and sacred, and seeing it being destroyed should move us deeply. Now let's use this energy to figure out how to improve things. I found listening to some of Daniel Schmachtenberger his work a profoundly intriguing way to begin to understand the current state of humanity and our planet. ONE WORLD ONE PEOPLE World is not abolishing frontiers, which would lead to a surge in migration, create tension and destabilise life on our planet. One World is rather abolishing the concept of borders in people's minds and replacing devotion to individual nations with belief in one united world, home to one race: the human race👌 Yes, we are different and that is great! I cannot stress that enough: we are all individuals and diversity is good. Yet we are also the same in so many basic things and ways. We all want to live, to experience joy, to be loved, to give meaning to our self, to our life… We Are One strongly believes that by coming together as one world, as one humanity we can overcome frontiers and change the world, for a better future for all of us. And we want to support this process, by writing and publishing stories that show us how our future could look like, how people around the globe experience life as part of one, from their point of view, today. The purpose of this publication is to publish articles that show and express how people from all over our world have the same needs, the same dreams — that we are in essence one humanity. The vision is that some day, we will act as one and no longer against each other. That we care about each other, because we are one, we are all part of the same species.
