Today I want to talk about something amazing our bodies do called autophagy. It's a natural process that happens when we fast, and it's super important for our health. So, what is autophagy? The word actually means "self-eating," but don't worry, it's a good thing! It’s like our cells' way of recycling and cleaning up. When we don't eat for about 17 hours, our cells start looking for ways to fuel themselves. They begin to recycle old, unused material inside them to keep us going. You can also kickstart autophagy with exercise and calorie restriction too. Here's the cool part: the process starts gently around 17 hours of fasting and ramps up the longer you go without food. It peaks at around 72 hours and stays steady if you keep fasting. But as soon as you eat, autophagy switches off because it's not needed anymore. Why is this important? Autophagy helps detoxify our cells, getting rid of waste and harmful stuff like old proteins and pathogens (viruses and bacteria). It’s like a deep clean for our cells! It also repairs mitochondria, the little powerhouses in our cells that produce energy. Healthy mitochondria are crucial because when they're not working right, it can lead to chronic diseases. Another big benefit is apoptosis, which means getting rid of diseased cells. This is super important because diseased cells can replicate and cause more problems, like cancer. By clearing them out, autophagy helps reduce the risk of diseases like Alzheimer's and cancer. So, fasting for 17 hours or more lets your body tap into this amazing process. Even just a few hours of autophagy can do wonders for your health. The longer you fast, the more your body gets to renew itself. Let’s make sure we take care of ourselves with proper fasting, exercise, and healthy eating. Our bodies are truly incredible!
