Geopolitics of global innovation competition: International Symposium with Minister Stark-Watzinger MERICS 5 Sept 2023 BERLIN MERICS is pleased to present a key-note speech and panel discussion with Germany’s Federal Minister for Education and Research, Bettina Stark-Watzinger. On the panel, the minister is joined by Jakob Edler, Executive Director of Fraunhofer ISI and Tai Ming Cheung, Director of the IGCC of the University of Calfornia. MERICS Executive Director Mikko Huotari will moderate the event. The symposium is part of a two-day international academic conference on the Chinese National Innovation and Techno-Industrial Eco-Systems jointly organized by the University of California Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC) and MERICS. China pursues a program of unprecedented ambition to manage the entire innovation chain. Seeking to steer outcomes, the Chinese government is increasingly intervening, organizing, and coordinating activities that stretch from basic research to final applications in industry and defense. The Chinese approach implies interventions in successive specific links of the innovation chain. The conference brings together leading international experts to understand the organization, functions, and increasingly interdependent operations of both the national innovation system and the techno-industrial eco-system. The symposium on global innovation competition and collaboration in a shifting geopolitical context will connect the latest academic findings with current challenges in politics and industry.

I am proud to share that my undergraduate thesis, “Australia: Guardian of the Indo-Pacific,” has been published by the Center for Global Affairs & Strategic Studies (GASS). I had the pleasure to collaborate with Regan Marina Thomas and Mariana Sotomayor on this strategic analysis of Australia which explores Australia’s role as a multifaceted actor in the Indo-Pacific region, as well as its emergence as a key player in the region amidst an intensifying power competition between the United States and China. The report considers the importance of Australia’s relations with other countries in the region in the context of shifting regional geopolitics. Finally, we present four prospective scenarios, the occurrence of which would drastically alter the Indo-Pacific’s regional order and consequently transform Australia’s role on the international stage. Honored to be part of this collection. Contrary to sanguine accounts of South-South ties, I argue that current Latin American-Middle Eastern linkages are dominated by agribusiness and lack the radical promise of past Third-World initiatives. Download link: https://lnkd.in/eG-AMuwv Focusing on Brazil, I show how these relations—despite the normatively positive sheen that often accompanies the South-South label—are reinscribing racialized class hierarchies, buttressing anti-democratic and inegalitarian actors/tendencies, and exacerbating the climate crisis. These dynamics have become even more pronounced due to the Russia-Ukraine war, which is causing greatly increased Middle Eastern demand for Latin American agricultural products to fill the void left by Russian and Ukrainian exports. https://lnkd.in/emnt9_gn Security in Context

U.S. must improve international scientific collaboration. A federal-government interagency report said the United States has made strides in improving international scientific collaboration, but that global research ties are under threat from politics and conflict, at home and abroad. International scientific and technological cooperation “has been a pillar of U.S. foreign policy and national security since the end of World War II, and it is at risk of deteriorating at a time when it is more important than ever,” the report concludes. https://bit.ly/4c27knf #internationalization #research

In the book "The Paths of Power," Frédéric Encel, a French writer and geopolitics scholar, examines the emergence of new non-state actors that are exerting significant influence on the world stage. Encel provides instructive examples rather than direct lessons, successfully presenting a detailed overview of the current global landscape.
