While watching the Lions win a playoff game the other day (a sentence I never thought I'd say), they displayed a model's take on whether or not the team should go for it on fourth down. I'm all for doing that, and definitely on board using advanced analytics during a broadcast. However; where it failed was in its explanation, namely, none. The broadcasters were simply told that this is what the model said and passed it on - nothing about yards to go, score, time remaining, etc. So rather than educating viewers on the decision making process, we were expected to just trust it because a model said so. This sort of blind trust can be fine in some circumstances. Generally, we don't need to know why a model is recommending certain products to a customer, why an email was flagged spam, etc. (Though we'd want the diagnostics for later in case something goes haywire.) But for strategic decisions, understanding the thought process not only informs us, but it helps us think through the decision to help us not only make better decisions, but also to ask better questions. Incidentally, both fourth downs were converted, though I doubt Dan Campbell was plugged in to the NBC broadcast.

Football is back, dominating our weekend television screens with two key broadcasters: the Play-by-Play and the Color Commentator. When it comes to your demos, which role should you assume? The broadcasters I admired from my youth often came from radio backgrounds. They excelled at "painting the picture" of the action, describing what the audience couldn't see. In today's world, it's crucial to take on the play-by-play role because you can see everything: the score, possession, down, and more. While the significance of the play-by-play role has diminished, the role of the color commentator has gained prominence. In recent years, the emergence of former players offering their insights, such as Tony Romo, who astounded the football world by predicting the next play. Solution Engineers should always adopt the position of color commentators. They offer valuable insights into why a feature is crucial for customers, delving into what may not be immediately visible on the screen but is essential. Your demo should address the "so what, who cares" questions, going beyond what's apparent to provide immense value to prospects. Don't settle for being a mere 'play-by-play' announcer in your next demo; ensure you deliver substantial value instead of merely pointing out what's on the screen.

Front and centre this week in UK news has been the #PostOfficeScandal. While this scandal became public knowledge several years ago, it has recently been brought back into the public's eye due the release of the #ITV series "Mr Bates vs The Post Office". This demonstrates the power of #narrativestorytelling in #visualmedia. Yes, there will be alterations and exaggerations in the series compared to what events actually happened and when for the sake of pacing and dramatic effect, but the story of what these postmasters went through is there. My point is, #corporatevideocontent doesn't always need to be "corporate". Believe it or not, you can actually make your organisations #videomarketing entertaining, (and therefore more engaging), whilst still conveying your message to the audience. Remember, in order for your #targetaudience to actually watch your video, they are investing their finite time into watching it - so make sure you are giving them something of value back! Humans love a good story, and weaving your message into one can result in actual, tangible real world change. You might think to produce this kind of content and put it on #tv is expensive, and you would be right, if you're comparing it to the calibre of a mainstream TV drama. However, if you're smart in your planning, focused on what's important and partnered with a digital TV advertiser, then it may not be beyond the realms of possibility for your organisation. You also have to weigh up the result of reaching out to a large amount of your audience through a #targetedvideocampaign with rewarding video content and the #calltoaction you desire. What would that result achieve for your organisation?
