Happy Teacher Appreciation Week to all of the great teachers out here! April and May are no joke in classrooms, so if you know great teachers, send them an encouraging note, lift them up, or say a little prayer for them, especially those who serve in high poverty schools. The data doesn’t lie. “In Missouri, 44 percent of newly-hired teachers leave in their first three years in the classroom and about 54 percent leave within the first five years.” Yes, our ultimate goal should be optimal academic and social emotional outcomes for children. However, school systems have to figure out paths forward that don’t compromise the wellness of their frontline workers - the teachers. To school boards, executive teams, and leadership teams all over the nation, I challenge you to be incredibly mindful of your decision-making process as it relates to student achievement. Are your systems sustainable for the teachers who are driving those outcomes? Are you making decisions without genuine teacher voice? Are you fairly compensating teachers for their efforts? I will forever be an advocate and champion for great teachers. If you are one of them, treat yourself to something special just for you this week! You’ve earned it! 🍎🍏🍎🍏🍎🍏🍎🍏

As I take notice of the highs, the lows, and the 'in-betweens' of HALO over 2023, I recognize a theme of resilience, and that's good. We have noticed that everyone and all organizations experience distress, grief, or anxiety, yet the ones that stand out are those who cope in ways that foster growth. (Shout out to Catholic school teachers who model resilience to their students and help them to make it one of the many advantages Catholic education can provide for their lifetime.) At HALO we believe that being open to change creates new perspectives and that allows us to reach for more possibilities. As we move into 2024, count on HALO to build the opportunity for more kids to receive a Catholic education in and around Dallas, even when challenges keep coming. Today I read an insightful piece by Kara Aurendel on the transformative use of ESSER funds across the nation.  From bolstering math and literacy skills to enhancing school culture and providing crucial social-emotional support for students, these federal funds have  been a lifeline during the pandemic’s toughest times.
