We have: Donated over 4.5 million pounds of chicken to more than 100 organizations across Chicagoland. Rescued tens of thousands of pounds of produce, day-old bakery goods and the like that would have ended up in landfills or composts. Distributed over 30,000 nutritionally designed meals and hundreds of personal care packs to needy students. Assisted hundreds of seniors to access food from local food pantries. Every Spring and Fall through our Poultry to Pantries Delivery Day we donate 120,000+ pounds (over 240,000 pounds per year) of nutritious protein to organizations in every corner of Chicagoland. Thank you for your generous contributions to Giving Tuesday! Yesterday was a magnificent day of generosity by the community of Grassroots Grocery. On Giving Tuesday, our community truly delivered: - Over $25,000 in donations on a single day! - 48 Giving Ambassadors used their personal platforms to share the movement with their communities - Countless others sharing about a community determined to fight food insecurity. With an inclusive spirit of unity for the greater good. To all, a wholehearted thank you! Giving Tuesday donations have propelled our community well on the way to the goal of raising $100,000, to fight food insecurity and bring the pantry to more people than ever in 2024. That means: - More excess produce rescued–With our new 24-foot truck, we're saving more produce every week - More people served–In the last two months, we’ve gone from serving 1,100 households per week to more than 2,500…and counting! - More people to power the movement–We’ve hired a full-time driver, who’s making daily deliveries into the heart of the community. In 2024, we’ll add to our staff, to increase our capacity even more! None of this would happen without you–a community of neighbors helping neighbors. In our 2023 Annual Report, we take a look at trends at FISH over the past few years, particularly comparing pre-pandemic numbers to today. What we are seeing is continued growth in need, as the high cost of living paired with fewer support resources adds more and more strain for families. One area in which we have seen considerable increases is the pounds of food we distribute each year. In 2023, FISH distributed 1,560,603 pounds of food, more than any other year in our history as an organization. Our marketplace could not run without the generous support of our community. We source food from four main sources: donations from our Broomfield grocery stores and restaurant partners, Community Food Share, in-kind donations from our neighbors (which includes food drives!), and purchased food made possible by our incredible donors and by grant funding. All of these support networks allow us to stock a variety of food and personal care items for our families so they can shop for what their families need. No one should have to choose between feeding their families and other basic necessities. Organizations such as those gathered at the Capitol today fulfill a vital role in our community: ensuring that all people have access to fresh, healthy food. Thanks to their tireless efforts, we can work towards a Wisconsin where no one goes hungry. Ensuring that everyone has the ability to feed their families should be a top priority in our state. That is why it is essential that we provide food pantries and other food service organizations with the necessary resources to carry out their essential mission. As demand for their services increases, so should our support of their efforts. The time is now to act in alignment with our values. It is not enough to say that all people deserve to have food on the table – we need to ensure that food makes it there. That is why I am proud to stand beside each and every one of these vital organizations and uplift their call for additional funding and resources so they can continue to serve our communities. Only by working together can we create a more fair and equitable Wisconsin where everyone has what they need to grow and thrive.

Agreed! Food insecurity is a real problem that affects people all over the state. Unfortunately, the answer can't simply be "visit a food bank near you". We need to talk about why there are food deserts all over our state. We need to talk about why black and brown families suffer disproportionately from food insecurity. We need to talk about why (in many cases) college students experience food insecurity at levels twice as high as the general population. Then, after we've talked about it, we need to do something about it. Something real and substantive. What we need is justice. Food justice for all!
