38% of companies are prioritising employee wellbeing over the next 5 years. While this may seem surprising to some, considering factors like inflation, recession fears and workforce erosion, Aon’s 2022-2023 Global Wellbeing Survey found that employee wellbeing is at the top of organisations' priority list. With the cost of living crisis in full-swing, as well as a major shift in perceptions surrounding the workplace and employee benefits, investing in the wellbeing of employees is increasing in popularity. In my opinion, the pandemic played a big role in this shift. The fact that more and more companies are moving towards a hybrid working model is just one example that indicates we are entering a different era in the workplace. But when it comes to 'employee wellbeing' - what does it truly mean and what will it look like in the next 5 years? I like to take a holistic approach to wellbeing; One that encompasses the physical, mental, and financial health of employees. What's interesting is that all these factors actually influence and compound one another. This is particularly true when it comes to financial and mental health. According to research by Money and Mental Health, 50% of people in debt experience mental health issues. Similarly, 40% of people with poor mental health say their financial situation worsens it. Understanding that workplace wellbeing is not one-dimensional, and that there are many moving parts, is vital. As more companies start prioritising employee wellbeing, I expect to see a greater emphasis on developing comprehensive strategies that encompass all aspects of an individual's 'health'. 😷 Since the pandemic we have rushed to pull together wellness resources for our people. Some employers created specialty websites with links to fancy articles, hired wellness staff, or beefed up their EAP workshops. We continue to want our people to be aware of available resources that support their mental health and well-being. I think this is all good, but not great. A new Workforce Institute report at UKG found that "𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 than therapists or doctors, and an influence equal to spouses and partners.” For the type of deep, meaningful, and lasting impact we want for our people – we need to reframe the employee mental wellness conversation. We are empowering our staff, yet forgetting about the huge 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝘄𝗲’𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗳 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀. I agree with this report. I believe managers are the front lines of co-creating a culture of care. Our folks are more productive and engaged when they are healthy and feel safe at work. Training managers how to stay connected with their team in a hybrid or fully remote environment, building trust, and offering practical workplace-appropriate mental health conversation training is a great investment for values based organizations that aim to make the world a better place. Training such as “Mental Health first Aid” from the National Council for Mental Well-being or other “mental health at work” type training for managers on how to support their staff are great places to start. Many managers are afraid to have conversations they know they need to have because they're anxious about "stepping out of bounds".
