PharmDs are powerful...and our own worst enemy. Top 7 not-so-pleasant things I've learned about PharmDs 👇 1. We are so scared to try anything new. 2. We think failure is the worst and avoid it at all costs. 3. The Board of Pharmacy is our god; we need their explicit blessing 4. We are locked in golden handcuffs and won't accept < current wage. 5. We don't think we are enough to solve the problems that bug us. 6. We keep identifying exclusively as pharmacists. 7. We plan instead of act. I spoke with >250 pharmacists 1:1 on the phone in the past 2.5 years. These 7 themes came up on nearly every call. I get it. PharmD's are a tribe that: - doesn't like risk - doesn't like trying new things - just wants a safe, comfortable, 6-figure job - is bred just to keep doctors and patients happy, but not rock the boat Pharmacy is changing. We've got to change to stay relevant, even if it means being uncomfortable. Sure, most of the profession may have the 7 weaknesses above, but not you. Chances are, if you're reading this, you're different. Keep going, you amazing PharmD! The world needs you to buck the status quo.
I think you got it spot on. Perhaps you missed 8. We didn't get enough business education to properly read our balance sheet and monthly reports. (If owner of an independent pharmacy).
Since (IMO) the most core job of a traditional pharmacist is medication safety- which put another way could be described as mitigating risk, I think it would be interesting to explore whether this training makes people more risk averse or whether it attracts risk-averse professionals. To add to your list of 7, I think it's also often viewed as a "waste" of your Pharm.D. to pursue roles that aren't directly related patient care or roles that you could do with another degree.
This truly resonates! Of course we are risk-averse for good reason but this quality is what often holds us back.
It’s definetly a mindset shift to get over 1-7. Even though I have stepped outside of the box, I still battle with those feeling sometimes. I just tell myself to stop, breathe and expand my vision. We can unlock those golden handcuffs and be rewarded by making way more than current wage…. If we really want too.
Most people got into this for a safe, comfortable, 6-figure (though when I graduated it was more like 62,000) job. To that end, saying taking less than current rate for many (like me) means that they cannot support their families.
Leadership is more caught than taught. As such, our leaders have modeled these behaviors for us, and we feel it is right or appropriate to continue the trend, even when we see massive evidence of how this model has failed us, our patients, and the communities we serve.
Id add “Mission driven individuals towards patients, whom commonly advocate against their own best interests in their professional lives - likely due to that comfy “6 figure” income they want to try and protect the most of… is my assumption… Otherwise their social missions for society and personal desires are very out of alignment. Example many pharmacists voted for the party that gave us Citizens United, which has effectively killed their own small businesses. Many will again in 2024 despite all the big industry rulings that will ensure their small business closure, or further deterioration of working conditions in corporate environments 🤷♂️
Time to step up. We are the only ones that are the drug expert, but the most underutilized resource. Pharmacy has given a lot of roles to nurses and it is time to reclaim our ground. Again, who is the drug expert and the Doctor of Pharmacy!
No wonder I couldn't hack it as a PharmD. I don't fit any of those molds. 😂
