Application platforms are quite under appreciated by general public. A large secret to the scale and success of enterprise software companies are these under the cover platforms that provide security, workflows, integration services, customer configuration frameworks, search, user interface services, database object model and now AI related services. This makes it possible for app developers to build features very rapidly without having to worry about system level services. Equally importantly it provides specialization of roles where a platform developer can focus on the platform while functional analysts or app developers build the apps on top. App developers always complain about platform slowing them but it is a necessary part of scaling.

They key word is abstraction. Complexity can only be handled and scale can only be achieved through abstractions. ChatGPT itself is an ultimate abstraction.
