Does your marketing team need a project manager? If you’re on LinkedIn often enough, you’ve probably already noticed (maybe even talked to) roles such as Marketing or Content Project Managers. A project manager is someone who coordinates and manages other people's work. Most commonly, the project manager will have a team of specialists, such as designers and developers, who work on the project. They will manage the flow of information between these different teams so that everyone is working in the same direction. But do you need a project manager on your marketing team? If you're a small company, you probably don't need a project manager. You don’t have the budget yet and you surely don’t have a large enough team. Plus, if you don’t have dedicated specialists, you’re probably not investing heavily in multiple channels yet. But if you're a large enterprise company with multiple brands and products, then yes, you probably do need one. Same goes for agencies juggling multiple clients. The main thing that makes your marketing team different from other teams in the company is their size and scope. If they're small, they can more easily be managed by one person who knows all of their needs. However, as they grow in size and complexity, it becomes more difficult to manage them effectively without someone who has been specifically trained to do this job well.

We have 3 roles covered in each Project team to work most efficiently. I almost lost a project before finding this out. I thought that putting the most experienced guys in the project was the best way to go. On paper, it looked great. I was on the project with my teammate: -Both with great experience in such projects. -Both with many ideas about what we can do. It should work, right? But it didn’t. We were halves of the same apple. -Good at long-term strategy -Not great at task organization -Not putting much effort into execution Not all the responsibilities were covered. We’ve learned from that error. Changed the team composition. And regained the client’s trust. From then on, we check if each Project has the right combination of talent. What composition works for us, and what are the responsibilities for each role? Strategist -Doesn’t have to know the whole team’s operations -Focuses on developing the Client’s business -Focuses on 3+ months (long-term) -Builds digital marketing strategy Project Manager -Manages Client and Team Expectations -Is responsible for reporting and budgeting -Focuses on 0-3 months (short-term) -Plans the team’s time ahead -Is in charge of a project Area Manager -Takes care of plan execution -Communicates with Project Manager -Responsible for areas like Paid Social, Content, Paid Search, etc. -Can work with more specialists in his area but coordinates their work PS Did I miss something on the list of needed responsibilities?
