🇺🇸What a beautiful night in DC, talking about advancing equity at scale with two #changechampions - Dr. Dominic Mack if Morehouse School of Medicine National Center for Primary Care and Mike O'Brien of America's Promise Alliance ✨ . Aside from making 50+ new friends, we had an illustrative chat that reminded change makers about the intentionality of the following to facilitate enduring community change — in any context: ✨Listen deeply and build trust with partners and community members ✨Create community buy-in by creating something of value to them — how are they wanting the gap to be addressed? ✨Funnel resources back into the community you serve ✨Develop a clear vision and build a good team/infrastructure that is ready to build and implement ✨ Plan ahead for the resource cliff— how are we thinking about sustaining change? ✨Develop a policy agenda to mobilize for lasting change— what is the “so what” of the change effort? . . #change #equity #changemakers #dc #weouthere

Earlier this year, we introduced the first of the three key pillars that drive and underscore our work at Northern Illinois Community Initiatives (NICI): Economic Mobility. In our introduction, we covered what economic mobility is, what it looks like at the community level, and how it functions as one of our core pillars. But what does economic mobility look like in action? This month, we dive into how NICI’s programs and the great work of our grantee partners are fostering economic mobility in our communities. Master Facilitator | Equity & Engagement Strategist | Anti-Racist, Justice-Worker ➡️ I help social impact orgs maximize their work by facilitating effective strategies in engaging communities and leveraging partnerships.
When community organizing is your superpower, you get a LinkedIn 'top voice' badge. 👀 I am not surprised that this is where I land. Honestly, community organizing is at the core of how I work - every day. I started my journey at the intersection of public health, immigrant rights, and racial justice as a Community Health Worker. It wasn't easy. Even being from the very same communities that I worked in, I had to learn how to sit back, be patient, and move in ways that were different - and sometimes uncomfortable. Here are the lessons I learned. 💡 It is always about relationships. 💡 Be willing to lean into the process. 💡 Challenge yourself. 💡 Folks are different and that's a good thing. 💡 Longevity demands vulnerability. 💡 Community "know-how" is transformational. 💡 Lead with system and policy change. Periodt. (yes, with the 't') 💡 Be accountable. 💡 It is always about relationships. These are lessons that are central to how I aim to live (because life is always about growing). And essential to how I work with leaders and organizations to facilitate group processes unraveling challenges and creating collective action. Thank you, LinkedIn for gifting me the opportunity to reflect. P.S. What's your superpower? __________________________________________________________________ Interested in effective facilitation strategies to do community engagement with intention and leverage partnerships for greater impact? NEW #TuesdayTips! This week, a quick primer on building community; org partner relationships, outreach, co-promotion, and working toward common goals. A good example of community building across sectors is in healthcare with hospitals partnering with social support orgs like food banks and family housing/shelters for Social Determinants of Health with the shared goal of improving the quality of life for their patients. How do you create community building relationships? It takes trust, transparency in communication, and a shared goal. Tell me in the comments how your community building efforts have gone, and any other tips to share!

1moThey have a lot of work to do. Hard to believe that their schedule only allows high schoolers to have 20 mins for lunch. Seems they could shave 5 mins off each class period to give them a 40 min lunch break to decompress and/or socialize.
