Here’s my local struggle… I’ve had more than one parent recently tell me that when they asked someone at their child’s school for a recommendation within our community to address their child’s mental health struggles, the school personnel did not have any suggestions. *If you work with children, you must have a network of suggestions for organizations who support youth mental health. *Educate yourself on the local providers. *Youth mental health is a collective responsibility. Navigating the behavioral/mental health system is so challenging, and when a parent finally asks another adult for a recommendation or guidance, the problem is probably pretty big. Please know your community health organizations, refer parents to NAMI, tell them to ask their child’s pediatrician, let them know that you will find out and get back to them. The following Florida-based private psychology practices provide youth mental health support (individual therapy, group therapy, and parent coaching): Herrera Psychology https://lnkd.in/d2q83pUJ https://lnkd.in/eSf-Qi9i www.childtherapysrq.com www.funpsy.com The following are Sarasota County nonprofit organizations who specialize in children and youth mental health: JFCS of the Suncoast SAMARITAN COUNSELING SERVICES OF THE GULF COAST INC Lightshare Behavioral Wellness & Recovery (First Step) I also know that these same businesses/organizations will provide other resources and referrals if they are not a good fit for the family. So, even if you remembered one organization you could provide the starting point for a parent who is struggling to find support for their child. If you are an educator or work in education and have other suggestions for sharing resources with families, I am open to ideas on how to help parents navigate the mental health system.

The Anti-Oppressive Practice Toolkit aims to help those who support students on campus better understand what anti-oppressive practice is, how it intersects with mental health, and why it is important to embed anti-oppressive practices into campus work. The two-part toolkit also looks into colonialism and mental health on campus. It highlights several important topics including slavery, structural racism and colonialism's impact on students.
