Last year, I benefited from a half-year-long break and fulfilled my daughter's dream by embarking on a world tour, visiting 17 countries. During this time, I also met entrepreneurs and start-up owners, offering advice and services that helped them thrive. A long-time friend I met in Africa thanked me, saying, "You literally changed my life, Cynthia, by changing my perception of life and work events." She then revamped her business strategy, adjusted her prices to make her company more profitable, and has since successfully developed her new venture. Another new co-traveler I met in South America recognized the importance of my work. A business leader struggling with financial challenges said, "Thank you for everything. We, as leaders, need your services in the short or medium term." These experiences have reinforced my belief that my work can have a real and significant impact on the lives of the entrepreneurs I support. My sister recently started her own property business and is leaving behind a successful career as a health economist. Sister goals. Growth goals. Just goals! 🤩 I’ve been living out in Portugal for a while now and coaching my sister for a year. We didn’t grow up around people who had “businesses.” It’s not the norm amongst our social circles or friends. We didn’t let that stop us 💪🏽 We changed our thinking. We changed our environments. We invested in the necessary expertise and joined circles of similar-minded entrepreneurs doing similar things. Personal and professional fulfilment often requires change. And change can be scary. If not now, when? One year ago today, I was given the "opportunity" to leave my corporate CXO role. It was the first time in my 29+ years of marriage that I have called my wife and given her this kind of news. I was not mad. I was not angry. Admittedly, I was in shock. But a sense of peace was over me. After some time to reflect and ponder what my next chapter of work-life might look like, it became crystal clear that I needed to stand up Highland Services Group and leverage my experiences to help business owners with their strategy, succession planning and M&A activities; support their “grow or go”. I became energized and found my passion to serve in a new capacity. I connected locally, began networking intentionally, engaged with other entrepreneurs and am finding a way to contribute to the success of others in a different way. Leading teams in the corporate world can be rewarding, as you see those you mentor grow, take on more responsibility, and succeed. Working alongside great people can make work fun, despite the challenges. But in this chapter, I get to do this across industries, through and for others and celebrate success in their business or through the sale of their business. To those out there in the early stages of their latest chapter, I say Keep Grinding! Define your own success and fulfillment.
