“Our world is facing an eco-social crisis…driven by the global capitalist system, centered around perpetual economic expansion (growth) and accumulation. Our obsession with economic expansion clashes with finite planetary boundaries.” This was the culmination of last month’s European Degrowth conference. When Harvard Business Review features degrowth we can hope and expect others to follow? #degrowth https://lnkd.in/eAE67UV6

Google says its “extremely ambitious” goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2030 “won’t be easy”. It said “significant uncertainty” around reaching the target included “the uncertainty around the future environmental impact of AI, which is complex and difficult to predict”. Life is ‘complex and difficult to predict’ for all businesses, and that’s why we turn to specialist climate and environmental scientists…all of whom agree we must radically reduce our emissions. And yes, it “won’t be easy” for any of us, but the alternative is catastrophic. Step up Google et al and stop making excuses. #AI #NetZero #excuses #ClimateAction #GHG #ESG #emissions

"Climate change is a threat multiplier, but women can be solution multipliers". Hear, hear! This valuable insight from the Economist Impact was written a couple of years ago and clearly highlights how we are NOT all in the same boat when it comes to the impacts of climate change. Significant change begins with radical, inclusive, and diverse policy improvements. It's still incredulous to believe that the COP29 panel was originally composed of 28 men, a move which was condemned as ‘regressive’ and ‘shocking’. The policymakers landscape must change - at speed and scale. Nothing for us, without us. #SDG5 #DiversityAndInclusion #ClimateAction #COP29 #ClimatePolicy

Lately I've spoken to a number of business contacts who are disillusioned with their work and want to help shape a better world. How can I use my skills to help other businesses act as a force for good, and to become B Corp if that's right for them too, have been the most frequently asked question. So, I'm delighted to announce that applications are now open for the UK for Good Leadership for Good Programme beginning in September. Leadership for Good is an interactive and engaging hybrid group programme for leaders, consultants, strategists and in-business sustainability advocates looking to advise on the principles of good businesses. This 'train the trainers' programme has been designed and delivered by two experienced B Leaders and is underpinned by the B Corp principles. You will leave the programme with an understanding of how business can lead the change we need to achieve a sustainable future, and the skills to support your clients or business to be the change. We champion inclusivity and empowerment to those who face systemic barriers to business so we offer an equity discount of 40% to women and marginalised groups. Interested? For my birthday treat last month I went to Storyhouse to watch the brilliant film Wilding (highly recommend). I love Storyhouse for the range of opportunities and events it offers. We are very lucky to have such a special place in Chester. But what really impressed me this time was the trailer at the beginning of the film. The trailer communicates concisely and clearly what Storyhouse is doing to make more of a difference to the environment. What a great creative way to spread the word! Thinking creatively about ways to engage your stakeholders makes all the difference. Congratulations to Annabel Turpin and the whole team. Take a look ⬇️ #Communications #Impact #Environment #Chester

When it comes to encouraging people to think differently, do you sometimes feel like you're pushing treacle up hill? Banging your head against a brick wall? Screaming into the void, a little bit like the famous Edvard Munch painting 'The Scream' ? I know many of my colleagues working in sustainability feel like this. It can be tough. Then there are days when, without having planned it, something changes. There's renewed hope. Last week I attended a great UN Global Compact Network UK Net Zero Business Transformation webinar at which Louise Kjellerup Roper recommended THE BERKANA INSTITUTE Two Loops Model. During the last four years I've read hundreds of sustainability reports, watched webinars, read tonnes of books, but I'd never heard of Berkana. A bit more digging led me to this uplifting little video which has made my day. Let's all be the best we can and be a bit more like the humming bird I say. Together we can, and will, shape a cleaner, greener, fairer world. Enjoy :) https://lnkd.in/eAyCwRzP

This is a vital update from Copernicus ECMWF and a must read of you want a snapshot to understand what's really happening when it comes to climate change. The report talks about 'Highlights' , and I understand why, but those below are for me very much the lowest of lowlights. Higher/lower than average, lowest, hottest, wettest, driest - none of it good, all of it highlighting the need for urgent action at scale from us all; individuals, political and business leaders. It's not the data itself. It's just data, albeit unprecedented for the large part. It's the implications for humans, communities, and nature. Did you know? *It was 1.50°C warmer than the estimated June average for 1850-1900, the designated pre-industrial reference period, making it the twelfth consecutive month to reach or break the 1.5°C threshold. *Antarctic sea ice extent was 12% below average, the 2nd lowest extent for June on record. *June was wetter than average over Iceland, central and most of south-western Europe, with heavy precipitation leading to floods in regions of Germany, Italy, France and Switzerland. *Last month was drier than average over Ireland, most of the UK, Fennoscandia, southern Italy and much of Eastern Europe, particularly around the Black Sea. *It was wetter than average over parts of North America, south-western and south-eastern Asia, southernmost Africa, regions of Australia and South America. *Drier-than-average conditions were seen across North America, several regions of Asia and most of South America. Severe wildfires occurred in northeastern Russia and central South America. We have to act and act now. For if not us who, and if not now when? #ExtremeWeather #ClimateChange #RestoreNatureNow #ActNow #CourageousLeadership
