Zanny Minton Beddoes, Editor-in-chief of the Economist, and her leadership team, hosted an intimate discussion about the state of the world, America's foreign policy and the future of global order. It was done in crisp British style. The conclusions of the discussion, I regret to say, are not terribly optimistic. Imperial leadership is messy business in these changing times. I shared with the Economist leadership team our Bonaire-based BIG Ideas Foundation's initiative to create a "Small States Asset Class." Recall that 75% (142/193) of all UN General Assembly members are small states with populations of 10m or less; and 85% of the Top 20 richest countries in the world by per capita income, are small states. "Small States" deserve their own category for cross-investment, common ideas, and shared prosperity. BIG Ideas can come from small places.

🔍 Are we ready to embrace the leadership the future demands? 🌍 As we step into 2024, it's time to embrace the vision of long-view leadership that prioritises truth, justice, and human rights. Mary Robinson, Chair of The Elders and former President of Ireland, reminds us of the critical need for a shift in global leadership dynamics. In a world scarred by conflict, environmental crises, and the challenges of multilateral cooperation, Robinson calls for a leadership style that looks beyond immediate gains to secure a sustainable future for humanity. 🕊️ Reflecting on the ongoing conflicts, the climate crisis, and the global struggle for human rights, Robinson underscores the importance of collective action and the principles of multilateralism. As we mark significant anniversaries – from the horrors witnessed in Gaza and Ukraine to the environmental milestone at COP28 – the message is clear: our global leaders must act with courage and vision. 💡 Inspired by the enduring legacy of Nelson Mandela, Robinson champions a leadership ethos rooted in dignity, justice, and an unwavering commitment to the common good. As significant elections loom worldwide, the call for leaders to rise to this occasion has never been more urgent. 🌱 Let us heed this call to action by supporting leaders who embody these values and by advocating for policies that ensure a fairer, safer future for all. The time for long-view leadership is now – for the sake of our planet, our children, and the generations to come. In a year that promises to be shaped by the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as factors such as high inflation, increased violent conflict globally, and a remarkable number of elections being held around the world, it is evident that #SupplyChain resilience remains a critical focus for governments, donors, and organizations worldwide. I was fascinated to read the latest in the #DevelopmentMatters thought leadership series, co-authored by my @Chemonics International colleagues Guiliana Walker and Tom Brown, which explores four key trends expected to shape #GlobalHealthSupplyChains in 2024.
