Autism isn’t linear. It’s not a straight line of ‘more’ or ‘less’ autistic, with individuals slotted into one part of a straight line. Autism is more of a spider web, with different elements to it, with the autistic profile presenting differently for each person, as well as for each person in different situations. Autism has many characteristics, those linked to language, sensory needs, physical development, cognitive function, social and emotional development. See each child like the spider web, each element of their presentation is linked and interconnected. Autism is a blend of different traits, the nature and impact of each trait being different to others. It's time to rethink our standards on what makes a good employee. A person with ADHD may struggle to start work on time, but could come up with the perfect solution to that problem that's costing your company millions, due to their natural strength in creative thinking. A person with autism may find it next to impossible to work in a crowded, noisy office, but be incredible at auditing your systems and finding costly mistakes while working remotely. Accommodating your neurodivergent employees helps your company as much as it helps your people.
