What a fantastic way to usher in 2024!! I'm thrilled to share that I'll be attending The 16th Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA). The #GFFA will take place in Berlin from 17 - 20 January 2024 and aims to provide key impetus to sustainable and resilient food systems for our future. The 2024 #GFFA will address the issue of Food Systems for Our Future: Joining Forces for a Zero Hunger World. Shaping our food systems in a sustainable manner to make them fit for the future while acting in line with the 2030 Agenda will require immense efforts. The international community has only seven years left to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and, in particular, the zero hunger goal. 🔎 franceinfo exposes practices at EBRD-funded #Ukraine poultry giant 🔍 🐔 MHP, Ukraine’s biggest industrial poultry producer, is back in the spotlight. Unfair competition with MHP’s cut-price chicken exports is one of the reasons French farmers have taken to the streets recently. The company’s environmental and social standards at the agribusiness giant, understood to be weaker than those applied in the EU, are currently being investigated by a team of independent experts. According to a report by France Info, 80% of Ukraine’s exported chicken is produced by MHP. Residents of the Vinnytsia region, where one of the plants is located, are concerned that environmental pollution at the plant is wreaking havoc on their health. Working conditions have also been criticised. Employees at the plant are expected to work 24-hour shifts every three days on wages of around EUR 400 a month, posing serious risks to their health and well-being. But MHP’s executive chairman John Rich claims that the company abides by the law and adopts international standards. This, Rich says, is proven by audits conducted by the EBRD and the IFC - International Finance Corporation. Both banks have provided MHP with hundreds of millions of euros over the past 15 years. 💰 ❗ The investigation has wider implications, calling into question the effectiveness of the EBRD’s and IFC’s policies when it comes to preventing social and environmental damage. We’re calling on the #EBRD in particular to update its Agribusiness Strategy to promote more sustainable regional #agriculture, help the sector show greater resilience, and ensure Ukraine’s agrifood system aligns with EU best practices! #Foodsystems 🌐 | “The biggest lesson I have learnt from the African Food Fellowship is the power of collaboration and systemic thinking. In order to achieve real change in the food system, we have to treat the root causes of the challenges we see, not just the symptoms, and we have to work together since these challenges are complex and interconnected,” these are the words of Mercy Munene, an Agrifinance Fellow and the founder of Shamba Connect. During the 'Transform Food Festival', Mercy shared an emotional story about how growing her own vegetables helped her to overcome personal health challenges and made her an advocate for homegrown food in urban centers. The festival brought together food systems innovators, entrepreneurs, practitioners, and decision-makers working across government, private sector, civil society, and community groups. It explored and raised the profile of existing and emerging issues in Kenya’s food systems, focusing on the impact areas of agrifinance, horticulture, and aquaculture. African Food Fellowship Director Joost Guijt urged guests to keep hope alive in the face of big challenges such as climate change, malnutrition, and poverty facing the food and agriculture sector today.“ The African Food Fellowship is built on hope. Not idealistic, wishful thinking, but hope rooted in research and science.
