The Rosewood Massacre investigates the 1923 race riot that, in a weeklong series of events, devastated the predominantly African American community of Rosewood, Florida. The town was burned to the ground by neighboring Whites, and its citizens fled for their lives, never to return. None of the perpetrators were convicted. Very little documentation of the event and the ensuing court hearings survives today. The only signs that there was once a vibrant town are a scattering of structural remains and a historical marker erected in 2004 declaring the site a Florida Heritage Landmark. Drawing on new methods and theories, Edward González-Tennant uncovers important elements of the forgotten history of Rosewood. He uses a mix of techniques such as geospatial analysis, interpretation of remotely sensed data, analysis of census data and property records, oral history, and the excavation and interpretation of artifacts from the site to reconstruct the local landscape. González-Tennant interprets these and other data through an intersectional framework, acknowledging the complex ways class, race, gender, and other identities compound discrimination. This allows him to explore the local circumstances and broader sociopolitical power structures that led to the massacre, showing how the event was a microcosm of the oppression and terror suffered by African Americans and other minorities in the United States. González-Tennant connects these historic forms of racial violence to present-day social and racial inequality and argues that such continuities demonstrate the need to make events like the Rosewood massacre public knowledge. 1. I don’t keep an actual bucket list, but if I did, having the opportunity to be on a panel at the Foundation For The Carolinas with Dorothy Counts-Scoggins, James Ferguson, Arthur Griffin while honoring the legacy of Julius Chamber to kickoff the Southern Education Foundation’s national conference would certainly be at the top of it. 2. Between integrating then Harding, what would become Irwin Avenue Elementary, my first school, being a lead attorney on the Swann (1971) and Capacchione (1999) cases that created and ended race based desegregation respectively, and being the board chair who made sure students like me had more access to AP and other higher level courses when I attended West Charlotte High School, each of these folks were instrumental in my journey of education advocacy. 3. I strongly encourage folks to study each of these individuals and their contributions that influenced not only Charlotte, but this nation. 4. When you say things like “no one is from Charlotte” and “there is no history in Charlotte,” you’re unintentionally exposing yourself as not truly researching and/or respecting the community you now inhabit. 5. Charlotte wasn’t created in the last 1-2 decades, as many newcomers are told. It’s had a long and rich history, that too many are eager to gloss over for what feels new and shiny. 6. It was truly humbling to share space with and listen to these historical giants who received sound but under-resourced educations in segregation discuss the resilience they demonstrated in work in the space not only of desegregation, but in the overall fight for educational equity and Civil Rights overall. 7. As I am now a public school parent whose oldest asked to come to this discussion, I am committed to honoring their legacies, grabbing the torch and fighting for opportunities for all children, but especially for the children this nation and the south, in particular, never intended to learn in the first place: Black children. Community building Principle #2 In so many spaces Black boys show up as fragmented versions of themselves, schools must provide a space for them to feel free to be themselves in all of their brilliance. This freedom is often experienced in racially homogeneous spaces because they do not see race as a deterrent to how others perceive them. In turn, many predominantly white schools have a history and a culture that makes boys feel unsafe to be who they are naturally. For schools to establish community school leaders must celebrate difference as opposed to expecting uniformity.

Today we recognize Juneteenth, a day when the last enslaved people in the United States, in Galveston, Texas, were proclaimed free on June 19, 1865. This day of jubilation and liberation marks a pivotal moment in our nation’s fight for freedom and equality. While we take a moment to reflect on how far the nation has come, we must also acknowledge how much further there is to go. In #highereducation, we have a responsibility to recognize and confront the injustices that stem from the painful history of inequality in our nation. Thank you for taking on the challenge to work together to confront these systemic inequities and empower today’s students and future generations to effect change that builds a more just and inclusive society. By doing so, we foster inclusive environments where every member feels valued, respected, and empowered. We ensure that everyone has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their backgrounds. And we lift up the voices of those around us and make sure they are heard. Connecticut State Colleges & Universities #students come from every corner of our state and our largest cities and towns. They proudly represent every one of Connecticut’s 169 municipalities, and I thank all of our #faculty, #staff, and administrators for standing by and exercising our system-wide values of inclusivity.
