Solutions Journalism as Innovation: What needs to change in media reportage? Innovation, according to research, is about change. Media innovation describes how processes of production, distribution and consumption are changing. But, in specific terms, media innovation refers to changes being made in the media ecosystem whether it bothers on production, distribution or consumption. Research has established that media innovation could be captured in four Ps and one S. These include product innovation, process innovation, position innovation, paradigmatic innovation and social innovation. While product innovation in a media organization relates to changes made in creating new media platforms or offering new media services or it could also mean the innovation of new genres of media products, process innovation refers to changes in the ways in which media products or services are created and delivered in the media ecosystem. Process innovation covers how media organizations restructure themselves for more effective and efficient media product delivery. Position innovation involves changes in how products or services are positioned or framed within the industry. On its own, paradigmatic innovation points at a media organisation’s mindset, values and business models. This implies that a media outfit could innovate with its mindset, values and business models. A good illustration of this is the ongoing convergence being witnessed in the print industry where many newspapers are pushing TV content on their website. Lastly, media outfits could also undergo social innovation when media organisations attempt to meet people’s social needs and improves their lives. In other words, this touches new ways of using media products for social ends. So where does Solutions Journalism stand in the scheme of the innovation environment? Solutions Journalism stands out as a beacon of innovation. As a product innovation, SoJo offers the opportunity for media outfits to innovate their creation of media content through a solutions lens. At the paradigmatic innovation level, Solutions Journalism gives the chance to change a media organisation’s mindset in seeing responses where there used to be problems. In other words, instead of pursuing a problem-driven approach, the media adopts a solutions focus. Solutions Journalism fits in well with social innovation as it aims to improve people’s well-being. Journalism's Evolution: Navigating Content Generation in the Digital Age Working in a prestigious newsroom alongside seasoned journalists provides a deep understanding of the intricacies involved in content generation. I gained this invaluable experience during my early days in mainstream media at NMG, a leading media house in East and Central Africa. Before a story could be published, it underwent meticulous scrutiny. Questions about the authenticity of sources and the article's significance were routine. The newspaper was often referred to as a family paper, emphasizing the importance of adhering to guidelines and house-style. This phrase was repeated until it became a fundamental aspect of our work. What many readers may not realise is that prominent media outlets diligently vet stories, resulting in the rejection of numerous articles during this process. I'm raising this discussion to remind young journalists that this vetting process remains crucial today, whether the content is intended for print or social media. The decision to feature a story was never left to an individual's discretion, especially at major mainstream media outlets. At times, I've read stories, on social media and print, from beginning to end and questioned how they made it into publication. They often lack a clear focus and come across as filler content. With the rise of digital platforms, the situation has become even more complex. A news story without a unique angle struggles to gain attention. In-depth analysis and exploration of the story's background offer print publications a chance to thrive. Otherwise, many of these articles might find their way onto social media, regardless of their source or quality. The reader would read them without any apologies. Reading habits are evolving, with the younger generation favouring visual storytelling over traditional lengthy narratives. The presentation style should adapt to this new culture. Above all, without addressing the real challenges of the modern world, publishers face a limited lifespan in today's fast-paced media landscape.

From Journalism to Marketing🚀 From my days in journalism to my current role in marketing, I've learned that the right questions can reveal powerful insights. In journalism, I mastered the art of drawing out information, even from reluctant sources. My journey in journalism began on the metro desk at Guardian Newspaper, working under the guidance of Temitope Templer Olaiya . It was an interesting season of my career and a growth journey. I went to court to gather domestic stories, went to the streets, slums etc. His feedback—"I can't see the voice here"—pushed me to dig deeper while writing. I began picking up the phone, reaching out to police PROs, agency DGs, and other authority figures, honing my ability to gather and articulate insights. Now, in marketing, these skills are invaluable. They allow me to uncover hidden customer needs, craft compelling narratives, and create strategies that resonate. I found that people often enjoy talking about their passions, motivations and their story in general. In gathering insights, I position my questions from that angle. First I build rapport. This helps create a connection and shows genuine interest in their story. Here are some starter questions to help you depending on your audience type. 1. I've heard different perspectives on XYZ. What's your take on it? 2. What trends are you seeing in XYZ right now? 3. What's one thing you think people misunderstand about XYZ? 4. If you could change one thing about XYZ, what would it be? "Go vertical or be left behind." My media prediction for the year was featured in Journalism.co.uk: "The pivot to vertical video will now focus on deeper explainer and investigative content. We reached peak news explainer in 2023, with a lot of newsrooms putting out the same wire-footage-explainer content that everyone else was doing. Engagement and long-term conversion to subscriptions, web traffic or loyalty was limp as a result. With TikTok prioritising longer videos, and the other platforms like Instagram following suit, we are going to see more faces on our videos and more centering of reporters themselves telling us why these stories are important and the effort it took to nail them down.
