"Trust goes hand-in-hand with openness and transparency, and it’s vital that the community trust not only the journals in our index, but also our organisation and the work that we do." AI/ML tools can be utilized to "clean up" even small percentages of erroneous publications and citations. At only 0.2%, these inaccuracies may seem insignificant, but their compounding effect can lead to incorrect conclusions and derail resources. This can negatively impact the pursuit of truth-seeking in science and hinder advancements for humanity. Let's ensure that we are utilizing all available tools to maintain the highest level of integrity in research. #AI #ML #science #research
That's what happens when scientists are forced to permanently live in "publish or perish" survival mode. The system is rotten. More than 10,000 research papers were retracted in 2023 — a new record https://lnkd.in/dDdApD2M

In this paper Birgit Schmidt, Jeroen Sondervan, Andrea Chiarelli and I present research libraries as an essential part of the puzzle when it comes to achieving research reproducibility. It was great to continue our collaboration following on from a previous Knowledge Exchange study on reproducibility and to start 2024 by contributing to my first published article! https://lnkd.in/ezSq_r_f

In Open Science, the Open Peer Review pillar promotes transparency, accountability, and collaboration in the scientific publishing process. It revolutionizes traditional peer review by opening access to reviewer comments, author responses, and the entire review history. Transparency builds trust in research, encourages constructive critique, and empowers the scientific community and the public to actively participate in evaluating and validating scientific findings. This process enhances research quality and reliability, aligning with the core principles of openness, inclusivity, and integrity in Open Science. 🌐📚 #CitizenScience #OpenAccess #OpenData #OpenMethodology #OpenSourceSoftware #CollaborationandNetworking #ReproducibilityandReplicability #OpenPeerReview

via Samuel Moore: "The bottom line is that journals are not equipped with their volunteer editors and reviewers, and non-subject matter expert staff to police the world’s scientific enterprise." This piece inadvertently (I assume) exposes the failings of commercial publishers and makes an excellent argument for taking publishing back into the hands of institutions and away from the market at large. https://lnkd.in/dAZNVYPX via Mastodon https://lnkd.in/djTNHW9z

"Publish or perish" or unethical human behavior. Unfortunately, the root of the problem lies not in science itself but in human nature. To restore faith in both science and scientists, essential changes must be implemented in the scientific community. #PublishOrPerish #EthicalScience #HumanNatureInScience #ScientificIntegrity #RestoringFaith #ScienceCommunityChanges #ScientificEthics

I don't know if history is monotonously "progressive" or, rather, consists of a series of cycles (the courses and historical recourses of Giambattista Vico). My feeling, after decades spent in Italy and years elsewhere, is that the evolution of human societies, at least from an ethical viewpoint, follows a downward trajectory with marginal oscillations, such as: y~ A* [(t/τ) β + C*sin(γt)], with A<0; and β,C ~ O(1) ; τ and γ^(-1) typical time-scales. Above, y represents an "index of ethical social consciousness" and t the historical time. The parameters of the equation are actually adiabatic variables, dependent on the place, and Italy most likely has a time origin shifted to the left compared to other European nations, of vaguely Calvinist culture. For these reasons, Italians know the evolution of ethical decline better than others and, wanting to combat it, or even just understand its dynamics, can take advantage of the consolidated historical knowledge of the phenomenon. This can be useful for those countries where the time-origin is shifted to the right: fighting a phenomenon still in the development stage, using the skills of those who have known it for a long time. This can slow down or perhaps curb the decline, preventing the pessimistic outcome I feared yesterday, that is, the affirmation of "a context in which dishonesty is less and less perceived as a disgrace, because everything is fine as long as it is useful to make a career". And in this context "malpractice can only spread and even meet tolerance or complacency. Because there is no one without guilt who can throw the first stone."
I just got this mail. The sad thing is that I don't think it's a joke. Where is the research community heading? Dear Professor, I hope this note finds you well! I am contacting you with a proposal for collaboration. I have numerous papers that need to be cited. In exchange for citing my papers in your work, I am willing to offer a thank-you fee. The articles are from various authors but within the same research area, enabling multiple citations per article. I look forward to your response and the possibility of a fruitful collaboration.
