I can not *not* post this here, of course. A whole chapter from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism annual Digital News Report, launched yesterday, is dedicated to my favourite subject in media - ‘user needs' topic. 10+ charts and graphs, a truly global outlook (40+ countries surveyed!) and lots of actionable data on one of the main trends in the publishing industry. Who would have thought that in 2016-2017, when Santanu Chakrabarti and Andy Jones from BBC World Service Audiences team brought what now can be safely called a *seminal* report to me, and the rest is history. 7-8 years from a research idea to a whole chapter in a global report (with a vital role played towards the end of this period by smartocto, Rutger Verhoeven and Erik Van Heeswijk!) - hats off to you, dear colleagues. Thank you, Rasmus Kleis Nielsen and Nic Newman for deciding to include this chapter in your report, and thank you, Richard Fletcher, for writing it. The link to this chapter is in the first comment.
Dmitry Shishkin You‘re too modest to mention that YOU made the user needs model famous, of course - no small feat. Congrats!
It’s great news Dmitry. In fact in 2009/2010, when Luba Kassova was Head of Audiences at the BBC News, Nic Newman headed up Future Medoa, BBC Journalism and I was the Deputy Director General’s Chief Advisor, Luba’s audience team adopted the user needs approach to underpin the major 9 month pre-General Election research.
Absolutely Dima - News need wheel was certainly a game changer ❤️
Santanu Chakrabarti Andy Jones Dmitry Shishkin and everyone else involved 👏
Such enduring work D. I love to hear it spoken about often, as I do.
Dima Dmitry Shishkin you made the User Needs model famous and helped BBC World Service language teams embrace it. That alone is not a small task. I always refer to it as - Dima’s user needs! 🙌🏾🙏🏿
That’s what passion and synergy can do in a long run. You are the true innovator, Dima, and everyone should learn from you.
Thanks Dmitry! Seems that we're on the right track and user needs are here to stay.
Well done Dmitry Shishkin and smartocto - I would take footnote 16 on p28 as validation!
