⚖️ Buchanan Legal Professional Services Q2 Update ⚖️ This quarter, hiring surged as we prepared for our Summer Associate programmes, highlighting the need for robust staffing partnerships to manage seasonal demands. A notable trend was the expansion of Practice Management roles in law firms, enhancing efficiency and allowing lawyers to focus more on billable work. Being a summer associate in 2021 meant a remote experience for my entire class. My firm sent me a laptop and monitor, and I set up in my law school's library for the summer. There are benefits and drawbacks to any situation, but the biggest downside to that summer was the lack of face-to-face interaction. We did the best we could with the cards we were dealt. I still made some connections, but nothing like I could have had we been in-person. So my advice to summer associates is take advantage of the opportunity to make connections this summer. The relationships you build this summer will prove invaluable when you are navigating associateship post-graduation. Go to all the events. Get people to talk about themselves. And remember their names. #summerassociates #younglawyers #biglaw #connections #networking

Make your summer associate part of the team. The tendency is to give your summer associate one-off assignments. Research this isolated legal issue for my case. Or do this non-billable project that I've been waiting all year for someone to work on. Your summer associate can't file an appearance, and they're not qualified to do a lot of litigation tasks. So how can you make them feel like a full team member on your case? Easy. Just talk to them about the case. Whenever you see them. Or whenever there's a new development. They probably have insights you haven't thought of. And even if not, the work is so much more rewarding when they feel like part of the team. And don't stop the conversation when the summer is over. If your summer associate is local, take them out to lunch during the year and catch them up on your cases. If they're out of town, stay in touch however you like to. It's my 11-year anniversary of being a summer associate, and I'm still at the only firm I've ever known. Because they did things like this. They made me and kept me part of the team.

I just completed A&O Shearman’s Technology and M&A Law Virtual Internship through Forage. In the simulation I: 1. Completed a job simulation involving corporate legal advisory for A&O Shearman's M&A team. 2. Analyzed a Series D Shareholders' Agreement to identify necessary consents for tech acquisitions. 3. Utilized legal research skills to determine consent requirements for increasing senior management pay and acquiring a payments infrastructure business. 4. Crafted a comprehensive email providing counsel with precise recommendations on requisite consents and obligations.
