Minds-on and hands-on, they learn by doing.   By sparking early interest and building confidence, we empower kids to view themselves as tech innovators. They see that “STEM person” could be them.   With more diverse voices flowing into the tech pipeline, imagine the fresh perspectives and discoveries we’ll gain. The future beckons.   There are always more gears to grease to reduce barriers and propel progress. When we think of STEM classes, coding and robotics spring to mind. But there are other ways to get kids involved and engaged. Over the past two years my daughter has been going to pottery or as I call it, "applied physics classes". She has learnt how to apply velocity and force to a mass to create a new object. She also has to do calculations. For example, clay objects shrink when they are fired by 30%. Getting materials right up front is vital for successful results. She struggles a bit with science in school, but here it comes easy for her and it has rubbed off on her academic work. How do you use a strength in one area to facilitate achievement in another? The Howard University Verizon Innovative Learning STEM Achievers program is igniting creativity with its unique approach to STEM education and uncovering exciting career paths in tech.   This innovative program gives middle schoolers an immersive experience beyond the usual textbooks. Know a teacher in the TVA service territory? TVA’s STEM Classroom Grant Program for science, technology, engineering and math education is now open for applications through Sept. 15. The program funds STEM learning projects in classrooms and schools in TVA’s seven-state service area and is sponsored by TVA in partnership with the TVA retiree organization Bicentennial Volunteers Inc. “TVA remains proud to support educators and students who pursue excellence in STEM subjects,” said Jeannette Mills, TVA executive vice president and chief external relations officer. “To build the energy system of the future, our region’s future workforce must be prepared to continue innovating for the decades ahead.” The application process is opening earlier this year so teachers have time before students arrive to submit applications, and so that grant funding can be distributed before January. The new timeline will give teachers in schools that receive grants the entire Spring semester to implement their projects. Last year’s program awarded $1 million in grants to schools across the Tennessee Valley and this year’s total will reach $1.5 million. Teachers can apply for funding up to $5,000 for STEM projects with preference given to applications that explore TVA’s primary area of focus: environment, energy, economic and career development and community problem-solving. Eligible applicants are teachers or school administrators in public or private schools, grades K-12. Schools must be in the TVA service area and receive electricity from a local power distributor served by TVA. An amazing display of creativity and collaboration in STEM education! What stood out for me? - Innovation at Play: Witnessing the diverse array of robotic designs and strategies for problem-solving - Collaboration is Key: The emphasis on teamwork and collaboration among Red & Blue teams was remarkable; it's a powerful lesson on how collective effort can turn visions into reality - STEM Education's Impact: The event underscored the importance of STEM education and its role in preparing students for the challenges of today's/ tomorrow's tech-driven world. - by the evolution of industrial-size robots As a professional and research scholar in the realm of technology, I can tell you there's much we can learn from these high schoolers and how they raise funds, design a team brand, and hone their teamwork skills.
