Senator Hickenlooper has consistently been one of the most thoughtful legislators on issues surrounding AI and other emerging technologies. Glad to see he’s taking the lead on voluntary AI assurance mechanisms as well. Great article from Alexandra Kelley. “The fact that these are voluntary guidelines is crucial; we typically evolve from establishing best practices in companies to developing standards, and then from there to creating regulation,” Divyansh Kaushik, a senior fellow at American Policy Ventures, told Nextgov/FCW. “This bill aims to be a catalyst in that process, enhancing the development of best practices and standards.” Kaushik added that the VET AI Act will likely expand NIST’s role in AI assurance procedures. “The industry should view this as a proactive step towards building trust and accountability in AI systems,” he said. https://lnkd.in/gtykrveG

Interesting perspectives on use cases for Generative AI in government. Within guardrails for risk and ethics, there are some really interesting applications (e.g. policy/regulatory updates, drafting, legacy application migration). All of these could give a serious lift to the public service, while legislation such as the AI Data Act is developed.

At IBM, principles of trust, transparency, and responsibility guide our innovations. Senator Thune’s draft Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Accountability Act is a critical effort to focus regulation on AI accountability and ethics. This bill would take a risk-based approach to AI regulation, and require that consumers be told when they are using generative AI. It’s time for Congress to develop targeted plans to ensure AI is brought to the mainstream in a safe manner. https://lnkd.in/eB6dQFJH

It is so important to ensure that the decisions about AI made today are going to continue to benefit all stakeholders into the future. This means compliance with regulations and applying the principles of AI, and responsible AI, across governance and decision making. As Caitlin Fennessy points out: "By the time hard laws are enacted, organizations will have poured hundreds of billions of dollars into AI systems development and integration. It is well worth building those systems and investing in AI governance structures with regulators' questions in mind."
