Let's talk trash! My team just released a new blog about cutting methane emissions from landfills. You know what happens when you dump organic material into the trash? That stuff goes to landfills where it decomposes with no oxygen, thus creating methane, an intense greenhouse gas. 🤢 Cutting methane is the strongest lever we have to slow the rate of near-term warming and prevent us from crossing dangerous climate tipping points. It's great to see new regulations that look to the 20-year Global Warming Potential for methane, rather than the often-referenced 100-year GWP. Over a 100-year period, methane has a GWP 28x that of CO2 — but that number climbs drastically to 84x over a 20-year period. With the urgent need to reduce methane emissions, new regulations that reference the 20-year GWP are a step in the right direction! Recently, I came across a post by Gov. Abbott highlighting the many areas in which Texas claims the number one spot. It got me thinking about the importance of acknowledging our achievements and the places where we can improve and take responsibility. One such aspect that often goes unnoticed is landfill methane emissions. Did you know the gas released by rotting organic matter in landfills holds 25 times more heat than CO2? These emissions significantly contribute to global warming and climate change. While Texas may excel in several areas, addressing this aspect that Gov. Abbott overlooked is crucial. By raising awareness about landfill methane emissions, we can start conversations, drive sustainable practices, and work towards reducing our carbon footprint.
