Sadly, this is too true and nothing new. Since I transitioned from the nonprofit case management sector over 15 years ago, this was already an issue. I have only seen it grow and do not see an end in sight. Those who know me hear me all the time say, "Real life gets in the way of instruction." Before culturally responsive teaching and learning, along with applying compassion/empathy, was a trend for education, Chicana/Chicano Studies, the other three core areas that comprise Ethnic Studies, and Ethnic Studies did this for decades. The issue was that we were seen as less than and dismissed as proper disciplines and majors. So, we were forced to meet the changes to be seen as valid and incorporate the Eurocentric standards of education that have never worked. Now, everyone wants to bring this into the fold for their classroom, but it is more challenging than sprinkling DIE into your CORs, classrooms, or campus/state policies. These are people's lives and overall health and well-being and cannot be taken lightly.
