It’s a challenging time to be in the business of higher education, and we’re seeing that play out around Kansas City. Just last month, Avila University touted its largest-ever incoming class. But meanwhile, the Catholic liberal arts and professional studies school is asking a court’s permission to tap into $6.4 million — more than a third of its total endowment. The move is framed as an attempt to comply with the spirit of donors’ intentions by giving more scholarships and helping Avila through financial challenges, but it requires overturning restrictions donors put on how their gifts should be managed. In its petition, Avila University cites the “current crisis in higher education” for its financial woes. Nationwide, colleges face financial pressures as they compete for a shrinking pool of incoming freshmen. Small, private colleges have seen enrollment drop the most, a report from Fitch Ratings says. Read more about what Avila hopes to accomplish and why it might be difficult to receive a court’s approval on our website: https://buff.ly/3ruibER

Gotta say - PA really needs to step up. 48 states - but not PA - enacted policy around industry partnerships and work based learning. 32 states - but not PA - enacted policies with significant funding for Career & Tecnical Education (CTE). 24 states - but not PA - addressed governance of CTE - creating new committees, task forces, and transfers of authority. PA needs to create policy and invest in CTE and WBL in a way that is equitable and accessible for all students. Can we start the conversation? In 2023, funding ranked third among the most common topics in state policies impacting CTE! Twenty states enacted 32 policies related to funding concerning scholarships, work-based learning, research into career pathways, and money for developing career and financial counseling programs. STATE HIGHLIGHT: North Dakota will provide eligible learners with scholarships equal to $250 for one, $500 for two, and $750 for three or more completed dual credit courses by eligible learners, expanding access to postsecondary education. Exciting News for HVAC Students and Professionals! For years, the traditional educational system has maintained a rigid separation between K-12, higher #education, and the workforce. However, the U.S. Department of Education is taking a groundbreaking step to bridge this gap and ensure that high school is not just a pathway to college but also to promising careers. The U.S. Secretary of Education, Miguel Cardona, recently announced the launch of the Career Connected High School Grant program. With a $25 million budget, this initiative aims to foster #collaboration between local educational agencies, higher education institutions, and employers. The primary goal? To seamlessly integrate the last two years of high school with the initial two years of postsecondary education, ensuring improved career outcomes for all students. This initiative, part of the Raise the Bar: Unlocking Career Success campaign, is designed to help young Americans tap into the lucrative job opportunities presented by President Biden’s Bidenomics agenda. This comprehensive effort will provide students with access to high-quality career pathways, preparing them for both current in-demand jobs and future #careers. For HVAC students, this is a golden opportunity. The grant funds can be utilized for a plethora of activities tailored to regional needs. This includes additional dual enrollment classes, covering expenses such as tuition, books, and supplies for underprivileged students, and even transportation to work-based learning sites. Moreover, there's a focus on developing new career & technical education (#CTE) programs in booming sectors. This could mean more specialized courses in areas like clean energy, which is closely related to HVAC, and resources to support teacher training and the necessary equipment to kickstart these programs. For those eager to learn more about this initiative and how the U.S. Department of Education is bolstering college and career pathways, sign up for their newsletter. The future looks bright for #HVAC students and professionals. With the government's renewed focus on career success and the integration of education with the workforce, there's never been a better time to be in the HVAC industry. Let's come together, leverage these resources, and unlock unparalleled career success! As a dual enrollment program and instructor with Northern Virginia Community College for the HVAC program I will be following up with updates along ways the Fairfax County Public Schools HVAC students and advisory committee members are tapping in this resource.

Gov. Pritzker’s proposed FY25 budget includes significant investments in young learners and early childhood, but not nearly enough for the Early Childhood Access Consortium for Equity, a program to help educators get degrees and credentials. Angela Farwig, IAFC’s Vice President of Public Policy, Advocacy, & Research, called for more state investment in the ECACE in a Letter to the Editor for the Chicago Sun-Times. Angela penned the Letter to the Editor alongside Maya Portillo, Senior Early Childhood Policy Advisor at Advance Illinois, and Catherine Main, Senior Lecturer and Director of Early Childhood Education at the University of Illinois Chicago.
