While millions of undergraduates across the nation juggle coursework with parenting, their unique challenges often remain invisible within college systems. This lack of visibility can lead to a significant gap in the support these student parents critically need. Today, we spotlight Nicole Lynn Lewis, Founder & CEO of Generation Hope. Under her leadership, Generation Hope has championed the cause of student parents by providing nearly $1M in tuition assistance, celebrating 170 degrees earned, and impacting nearly 100,000 student parents through partnerships with 16 colleges and universities. Through their systemic change efforts and technical assistance program, FamilyU, Generation Hope is making monumental strides. "We are already seeing states pass legislation that requires higher education institutions to collect data on parenting status," Nicole shares. "It's inspiring to see the tangible results of these initiatives." We call on the EdLoC network to engage with this cause: share your insights, support legislative change, and advocate for better recognition and support of student parents. Your actions today can pave the way for more young people of color to thrive. #WeAreEdLoC #EducationEquity

It emphasizes the need for a paradigm shift in how we serve them, highlighting that today's students come from varied backgrounds with different needs and challenges. Many are working adults, parents, or returning learners juggling multiple responsibilities, and institutions must offer flexible, inclusive, and supportive environments to help all students succeed. #highered #highereducation #higheredleadership #onlinelearning #studentsuccess #diversity #inclusivity #adultlearners

The "Dilution theory" provides valuable insights into understanding the potential educational advantages experienced by only children. According to the resource dilution model, the allocation of parental resources, such as time, attention, and financial support, is not infinite but rather finite within a family unit. As a result, when a family has multiple children, these resources may be divided among them, potentially leading to a dilution effect. However, in the case of only children, the absence of siblings means that they may receive a larger share of parental resources, which can contribute to enhanced educational outcomes. This theory suggests that the undivided attention and resources available to only children could positively impact their academic performance, providing a lens through which to understand their potential educational advantage compared to children with siblings. It's way past time to shine a light on the erasure faced by Native/Indigenous students in our educational systems. When we fail to even name this group, we perpetuate a cycle of marginalization and disadvantage that has persisted for far too long. But it's not just about recognizing the barriers they face; it's also about celebrating their gifts, talents, and unique perspectives. Native/Indigenous students bring invaluable richness to our schools and communities, offering insights and experiences that enrich everyone's learning journey. Let's stop delaying and start advocating. Let's ensure that Native/Indigenous students are not only recognized but fully supported, empowered, and given the opportunities they deserve to share their gifts and thrive. #NativeEducation #IndigenousEmpowerment #InclusiveEducation #EquityInEducation https://lnkd.in/g3cywepV

In a new opinion piece penned by Julie Peller and Eric Bing for the online publication Diverse Education, an exploration into the actual makeup of the modern student body might raise some eyebrows. Significant numbers of today’s college students no longer conform to the traditional notion of someone in their late teens or early 20s who matriculated to a four-year university straight out of high school. A third of today’s college students are 25 and older, and more than a third of undergraduates are part-time students. More than half are first-generation students, which means that their parents didn’t earn bachelor’s degrees, and more than 40% identify as a race other than white. Three out of 10 speak a primary language other than English, and two out of 10 have some type of disability. Four in every 10 college undergraduates leave school before completing a degree. These college stopouts have grown into a population of more than 40 million American adults who have some college credit but no degree. #collegelife #studentlife #apartmentliving #university #housing #socialgood #support #change #socialimpact #dogood #communitysupport #nonprofitsofinstagram #nonprofitorganization #changemakers #pnw #pacificnorthwest #pdx #pnwlife #portlandoregon #studenthousing #highered #homelessness #studenthomelessness #ARCSprogram

Interesting insight in benefits of school integration: "“The benefits of integration appear to flow through social links between high and low income people — networks of opportunity,” the authors write. “Schools with strong networks of opportunity offer students a real chance to an improved life, regardless of the student’s own background.” https://lnkd.in/ezDvaqDy #education #minnesota #school #integration
