In my book with journalist Rikki Schlott, The Canceling of the American Mind, we show that campus cancel culture is not just real, it’s on a historic scale. We define “cancel culture” as the uptick around 2014 of campaigns to get people fired, expelled, deplatformed, or otherwise punished for speech that is, or would be, protected by the First Amendment, and the climate of conformity that results. The statistics show that we are going to be studying this period of repression 50 to 100 years from now, just like we study the Red Scare. https://lnkd.in/gmumkKpe

🌟Shaping Tomorrow: UTS Forum Explores the University's Evolving Role🌟 This morning at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Academic Board forum facilitated and chair by Professor Anthony Dooley, there was a great opportunity to delve deeply into two pivotal questions: "What is the role of a University in today's society?" and "How does this impact our academic mission?" This discourse was enriched by hearing from distinguished panelists, each bringing a wealth of experience and advocacy. The panel included Professor Alan Davison, The Hon. Prof. Verity Firth, AM, Professor Anne Gardner, Mr. Nour Al Hammouri, and Professor Carl Rhodes. Together, they shed light on vital issues, and the panel discussion and subsequent Q&A covered vital aspects such as: -Upholding academic freedom 📜 -Addressing and solving complex problems our society currently grapples with 🌍 -Acting as agents for social change and justice ⚖️ -Fostering responsible citizenship and promoting well-being 🤝 -Cultivating an environment where disagreement is not just tolerated, but valued and explored 🗣️ -The significance of providing continuous and meaningful learning experiences for both students and academics. 🎓 These conversations remind us of the evolving nature of our institutions and their integral role in shaping a better future. Looking forward to continued dialogues on these topics. #UTSAcademicBoard #HigherEducation #UniversityMission 🎓🌐

How can we nurture the spirit of inquiry from the classroom to the lab, and well into the corridors of revered institutions? As we journey through the storied path of academia, this comic by Jorge Cham from PhD Comics offers a humorous yet poignant reflection on the evolution of a scholar's freedom to explore intellectual curiosities. From the uninhibited dreams of a pre-grad student to the seasoned musings of an emeritus professor, each stage presents its own set of challenges and expectations. It's a vibrant reminder of the ebb and flow of academic life, where the thirst for knowledge is sometimes quenched by the waters of necessity and compromise. Despite the shifting landscape, the essence of scholarly work - the relentless pursuit of truth and understanding - remains a constant beacon. In fostering a culture that prizes intellectual freedom, we must encourage autonomy and creativity, regardless of career stage. Let's ask ourselves: how can we nurture the spirit of inquiry from the classroom to the lab, and well into the corridors of revered institutions?

🌟 Reflecting on the Power of Exploring Unfamiliar Spaces 🌟 Recently, I had the privilege of attending a UC Irvine School of Social Sciences panel featuring first-generation speakers, and the experience truly changed my perspective. Hearing Dr. Jeanett Castellanos, Dr. Long Bui and Dr Phoenix's diverse narratives and the challenges they overcame was truly inspirational. While I may not be a first-generation student myself, their stories resonated deeply with me, highlighting the value of learning from individuals with different backgrounds and life paths. Each speaker shared their unique journey, highlighting themes of resilience, determination, and the pursuit of opportunity. Their stories served as a poignant reminder of the privileges I've been afforded and the responsibility I have to make the most of them. It reignited my drive to work harder and seize every opportunity that comes my way. In light of this, I feel compelled to encourage my fellow students and colleagues at UCI—and beyond—to take ADVANTAGE of every campus resource available to them. Whether it's attending panels, joining clubs, or seeking mentorship, there's immense value in stepping out of our comfort zones and embracing unfamiliar spaces. Even if you are unsure where you fit in - like I was when I attended a first-gen panel while not being first-gen - get out there!!! It's in these moments of discomfort that we have the chance to grow, broaden our perspectives, and gain insights that can shape our paths forward. #Diversity #Opportunity #Inspiration #CommunityBuilding #LinkedInReflections
