Getting On Board's Festival of Trusteeship is well underway! Today's schedule is ram-packed with brilliance. ✨ Personally, I've already picked up a handful of really useful tips that I'll be taking into my own board work. We had a brilliant first day of our Festival of Trusteeship yesterday! We kicked off with one of our regular webinars, How to Diversify your Charity Board with diversity expert Sophia Moreau, quick stepped along to our keynote speech from the Charity Commission for England and Wales's Chair Orlando Fraser with questions answered insightfully by their excellent Head of Strategic Policy Holly Riley. Then it was off to learn about how chairs can effectively power share with a brilliant panel chaired by the Association of Chairs charismatic chair Joe Saxton before finishing up with Sapna Marwaha's thoughtful and welcoming session for aspiring trustees on finding your passion and purpose. Learning we gleaned included: 🏆 You can talk up diversity without talking down existing trustees Widening the pool of applicants isn’t about moving current trustees on; it’s about giving them help to bring more people on board.   💬 Communication is key to effective chairing Chairs: Make time to get to know all your board members - meet regularly, ask them questions. In meetings, leave enough time for proper scrutiny and discussion.   ⚡ Your lived experience is your superpower It can be a powerful way for you to evidence your passion - your why. It can help you articulate your commitment to a particular cause. Though you should never feel you have to share personal information you're not comfortable sharing. A great speech or keynote can linger in your mind for days, weeks, months, years to come. It can motivate you to keep going, when the going gets tough. It can reaffirm your purpose and keep organisational fires burning. One memorable keynote I’ll never forget was hearing global philanthropist Dan Pallotto of Ted Talks fame tell the audience “That the way we think about charity is all wrong” at a global fundraising conference for YMCAs from around the world, in the USA. It helped me to see more clearly the value of the work I did in the not profit sector and it also changed the way I helped not for profits communicate, with more confidence and belief. Another memorable speech I had a hand in creating was delivered by the Y’s national treasurer Tom Stephenson (the youngest ever treasurer for the Y in Australia) at the closing ceremony of the YMCA’s 175th birthday celebration in London in 2018. A link to a video of the speech is below in comments. Tom totally nailed his call for more young people to be involved in the governance of the world’s largest and oldest not for profit. He doesn't stop reminding the organisation of the importance of this, and more importantly, he continually matches his words with actions to ensure young people are involved in organisational governance. In the realm of major gift & capital campaign fundraising -one thing is for certain... Volunteerism is a key to raising significant revenues, accessing advocates to further the cause has no price but has great value. It can't be done with them. I recently said to a Founder of a wonderful organization that nothing happens without a 'champion'. Often this is a passionate volunteer who freely gives of their time, talent, and treasure. But what about us who are 'paid to raise'? Do we need to give of our time as well? Absolutely. I am a better practitioner because of my unpaid involvements in organizations like Rotary International, AFP Global, among others. Today I wish to let you know about an organization that I volunteer with, that is all volunteer run -no paid staff at all. M4M www.Medals4Mettle.org was started by Dr. Steve Isenberg MD almost 20 years ago. Competitive runners like myself award medals to cancer patients, plus others with life-threatening conditions. Both children and adults who are in the throws of cancer are the recipients of medals to encourage them in their own race. to date, an astounding 70,000 medals have been given. Wow. The medals are awarded to individuals who are "running a much more difficult race," often with an unknown finish line. The mission of M4M is to appreciate the pay-it-forward concept that links the distance runner’s mettle with the mettle it takes to battle life challenges. The donor's acknowledgement of the recipient's mettle encourages the recipient and creates a human connection honouring the grit, courage, and bravery they share. #medals4mettle #doitbecause
