Yesterday, we donned denim to stand in solidarity with survivors of sexual violence, but our commitment to change can’t end there.
The history of Denim Day reminds us of the power of protest and solidarity. It originated from a harrowing injustice, where a survivor was blamed for her assault because of her choice of clothing. Yet, from this darkness emerged a beacon of hope—a global movement determined to challenge victim-blaming and advocate for survivors' rights.
Yesterday, as we wore denim, we sent a powerful message: clothing is never consent, and survivors are never at fault. But our support doesn't stop at the surface. It delves deeper, into the realms of empathy, understanding, and action.
In the Army, we understand the importance of supporting survivors through programs like the Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP). We recognize that creating a culture of trust and support is essential for the well-being of our service members.
So, as Denim Day 2024 becomes a memory, let's carry its spirit forward. Let's continue to advocate, educate, and empower. Together, we can create a world where survivors are believed, supported, and respected.
Let's stand stronger, and let's stand together.
