The EU US Data cofcof Privacy Framework (DPF) has landed. Within a week, it could have been on the anniversary of another landing: the first man on the moon. "Hurray Claude, you can stop complaining about illegal processing. We can send data to BigTech to the US again because now, all is safe again. It's the end for bizoscore. Ha ha." "Not so fast. First, did you ever stop using a US provider?" "Not really, but no one is going to stop us using google or microsoft, they bring so many jobs to Ireland. Google even spoke at the DPC conference post Schrems II" "I see. Do you realise that the entire list on the DPF register is the same as those who were self-certified on Privacy Shield? It means that if something had changed for the safety of personal data, you would have thought criteria to qualify would be different, wouldn't you?" Silence "Let me show you something about bizoscore.eu since you mentionned it. These are the figures, and they don't look like they are fading away. Let me also show you something about your site. These data processors aren't on the DPF register and I bet you didn't know about them." Don't be fooled and remember, it's cheaper to use a EU provider than play ping pong with adequacy decisions not worth the paper they are written on. #gdpr #privacy #dataprotection

This week I am surfacing something from the archives — a selection of articles about privacy. The motivation is that today (January 28) is Data Privacy Day. An international awareness event that was initiated by the Council of Europe (not to be confused with the European Council) back in 2008. This date was chosen because on January 28, 1981, the Council of Europe proposed 'Convention 108'; the first internationally binding agreement to protect personal data and could be considered a precursor to, or inspiration for, the GDPR. Since 2008, various organisations, both governmental and non-governmental, educational institutions, companies, and individuals use this opportunity to make a case for privacy and to elucidate the inherent dangers of systematic data collection by tech corporations and government agencies. But why mark the day? For one thing, privacy is a basic human right that's valuable and worthy of protection. For another, it is an important corner stone of democratic societies. And last but not least, there's simply no way of knowing what kind of inferences can be drawn about individuals in the future by means of the tremendous amount of collected user data in conjunction with new technologies such as artificial intelligence. #Privacy #PrivacyMatters #PrivacyProtection #DataBreach #SecurityAwareness https://lnkd.in/ggC-Kww9
