IBM announced the acquisition of HashiCorp. This move, like everything we do, is to accelerate our client's journey as they deploy Hybrid Cloud and gen AI. We've seen firsthand that productivity improves and free cash flow increases when leveraging these technologies for key business processes. Dave ,as an IBM shareholder and former hedge fund managing director my view of the Hashi acquisition is not customer centric. Hashi Corporation for $6.4 billion, Red Hat for a whopping $34 billion. We haven't heard much about Red Hat's explosive growth since the deal. At the time Red Hat was acquired their growth was ~20%/year. Now credible estimates place Red Hat's growth in single digits. Maybe it's just me, but it feels like these companies get bogged down by IBM's sales bureaucracy . Maybe IBM's strength lies in established markets. IBM's acquisition strategy to date leads me to conclude one cannot acquire their way to growth

It’s been 2 weeks since IBM announced its intent to acquire HashiCorp for $6.4bn. And the industry has had a lot to say about it. So, I’ve tried to answer the who, what, why's and when’s below… Who are Hashicorp? Hashicorp are THE infrastructure cloud company. Their products help companies automate multi and hybrid cloud environments with Infrastructure and Security Lifecycle Management. By enabling developers, operators and security professionals to provision, secure, run and connect cloud-computing infrastructure. What do their products do? > Terraform – provides organizations with a single workflow to provision their cloud, private datacenter, and SaaS infrastructure and continuously manage infrastructure throughout its lifecycle. > Vault – provides organizations with identity-based security to automatically authenticate and authorize access to secrets and other sensitive data. > Additional products – Boundary for secure remote access; Consul for service-based networking; Nomad for workload orchestration; Packer for building and managing images as code; and Waypoint internal developer platform. Why are IBM acquiring Hashicorp? It’s all a part of the Hybrid Cloud & AI strategy… Hybrid Cloud - Hashicorp works beautifully with Red Hat and has a proven track record or enabling clients to manage the complexity of todays infrastructure and application sprawl. AI - HashiCorp brings infrastructure suited for generative AI products to IBM. In particular, IBM identified HashiCorp’s automation tools for heterogeneous, dynamic, and complex infrastructure as useful for customers who may otherwise be overwhelmed by the sprawl and number of possible AI applications. When will the acquisition be completed? IBM is hoping to have the transaction completed before the end of 2024. Adding Hashicorp to the IBM Technology portfolio feels like a pivotal moment for our Hybrid Cloud strategy and shows the importance we believe the platform teams will have to drive productive cloud infrastructures and AI workloads.
