Today is International Migrants Day, a day to celebrate the contributions and resilience of millions of people who leave their homes in search of better opportunities, safety, and dignity. 🌎   Migrants are not just numbers or statistics. They are people; a brother with a dream; a mother looking to save her kids from war; a breadwinner sending funds back home to feed a family; a soul chasing a dream. They deposit their skills, culture, time, and even youth in the countries they migrate to.   As Nigerians, we know what it means to japa. If you no japa, you know person wey japa. This gives us an intimate understanding of what it means to be a migrant. 🇳🇬   Let’s use this day to raise awareness of and appreciate migrants and their contributions to our society. Let’s also use this day to advocate for better policies and practices that ensure the dignity and well-being of migrants.💪   #InternationalMigrantsDay #Migration

Work Integration in Comparative Perspective’ edited by Simone Baglioni and Francesca Calò. The book explores the labour market integration of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers across seven European countries: the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Italy, Switzerland and the UK. Using empirical data from the Horizon2020 SIRIUS Project, it investigates how legal, political, social and personal circumstances combine to determine the work trajectory for migrants who choose Europe as their home. Migrants from Venezuela, Guatemala! What’s the difference between them and migrants from England, France, Spain 300 years ago. Did the Native Americans close the border? What are we doing? The migrants who walk 1-2,000 miles to find a better, safer life in the United Sfates have courage, strength, and desire to work and create a life they can’t see in their own country. They give up family, language, and culture for a better vision of life. Now, what’s the difference with them and the Italians in the 19th and early 20th centuries who “invaded” America? Much less those who came and killed the Native Americans in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries? What are we doing? Is anyone asking this question? We need hard-working people with values we cherish and believe are valuable. So, why are we trying to keep them out of our country? We need a real immigration policy that recognizes the value of human life and hard work and desires to improve their own life. Wake up America! As an exciting start to 2023… I’m very happy to share a new report out today with ODI, looking at public attitudes and narratives towards refugees and other migrants in Poland. Despite being half-Polish, and having done lots of work on public attitudes and narratives in general, this is the first time I’ve worked on Poland in a professional context - and I’ve learned a lot through the research. Over the past three decades Poland’s migration context has been transformed: from a homogenous society largely closed to the outside world to an increasingly prominent country of destination for refugees and foreign workers - including, most notably, Ukrainians.  The report draws together existing research and data to present an overview of narratives and public attitudes towards refugees and other migrants in Poland, alongside key features of Poland’s historical migration context and relevant policy frameworks.  It highlights how, since 2015, the dominant narrative around refugees in Poland has been one of ‘us’ versus ‘them’. Refugees from the Middle East and Africa have largely been painted as a threatening ‘other’ (though some alternative narratives exist), while Ukrainian refugees are characterised as part of an ‘us,’ united with Poles against Russian aggression.  While continued solidarity towards Ukrainians is by no means a given, the research highlights an opportunity to explore a narrative that is less about ‘them’ and more about a tolerant, compassionate ‘us’, building on the groundswell of support to Ukrainians to emphasise a wider image of a welcoming and compassionate Poland. The brief draws on research on the visual representations produced by government migration institutions in Canada and Europe..."
