Nagad Digital Bank is set to commence its commercial operations in July, revolutionizing banking in Bangladesh through branchless services across the country. As a leading mobile financial service (MFS) provider, Nagad plans to initiate in-house operations on a trial basis from March 26 to ensure customer-friendly products and services. With approval from the central bank in October, Nagad aims to accelerate cashless transactions and digital transformation, contributing to the government's financial inclusion agenda. The digital bank, holding a 38 percent stake in the MFS market, targets the grassroots level, focusing on the 52 percent of the economy involved in informal transactions. Nagad plans to bridge the gap between traditional branch-based banks and MFS operators, acting as a full-fledged digital bank. It has collaborated with global technological solution providers and will leverage its database of 8.5 crore customers to design individualized products using artificial intelligence. While acknowledging challenges such as low smartphone penetration and financial literacy, Nagad plans to provide services through 71 service centers initially and forge partnerships with larger banks, especially those with rural branches. Nagad Digital Bank PLC gets licence as a digital bank by the Bangladesh Bank. The approval is being given by the board of directors of the regulator of Central Bank. This means that Nagad Digital Bank can now operate like any other conventional bank. The primary difference is that digital banks will only have their headquarters and no other physical branches, unlike traditional banks which have a physical presence nationwide. Nagad has been advocating for a digital bank to transform Bangladesh into a smart economy through cashless transactions.
