“Measure success not only on intention, but also on the impact created for all groups.” Tech’s current workforce doesn’t match the diversity of our communities. With a lack of expertise in the needs of 8 groups, the burden often falls on BIPOC/historically marginalized communities to raise awareness, educate, and empower. Our Technology Inclusion Principles create a path to change so that both under-represented groups and allies can contribute to inclusive solutions. Connect the dots…Mind Bicycle Digital inclusion has been a critical issue for many years, with significant efforts to understand and address it. A seminal report from 2008, "Digital Inclusion: An Analysis of Social Disadvantage and the Information Society," shed light on how technological exclusion reinforces social disadvantages such as poor education, economic constraints, and social isolation. Sixteen years later, the insights from this report still reman relevant. The barriers to digital engagement it identified—such as poor access to high-quality broadband and negative attitudes towards technology—are still relevant today. This comprehensive analysis offers valuable lessons for us as we continue to strive for a more digitally inclusive society. By focusing on enhancing education, improving home access to broadband, and utilising social networking to address isolation, we can make significant strides in bridging the digital divide. Calling all tech founders in the EU/UK...we need YOUR voice! 🗣 Our partners at EURO_GENDEX (a new initiative under the European Innovation Council’s Horizon Europe program) have launched a survey, and they need to hear from you! 🌟 Their mission is to improve and expand the diversity of talent across the entire European tech ecosystem to drive world-class performance and growth. GENDEX will help policymakers and investors to make better-informed decisions by providing data and insights into the journey of diverse founders, particularly women, from pre-seed to IPO. 💪 Their survey aims to collect relevant information on how diversity impacts the fundraising journey for start-ups and scale-up founders in the European innovation ecosystem. As we enter June, let’s start with inspiration. An innovative lady brings a spark of creativity and empowerment to her community… Meet Alice Wa.Mbui - Head of Innovation, Lifelong Learner and Adapter. Currently, Alice takes pride in how innovation and technology are embraced by underserved communities, witnessing firsthand the transformative impact it has on lives. Alice’s concept for an innovation hub was adopted by the local county government. This hub touched the lives of over 1,000 individuals through product development, funding access, and scaling opportunities. This hub, a beacon during the pandemic, aimed to foster economic recovery and was honored with a national award for being the best-run county government hub. As a mentor, Alice is proud of her work with women in tech, particularly her impactful efforts in Westpokot, northern Kenya. There, she focused on integrating girls affected by FGM and early marriage into the tech community, a noble cause that earned her recognition from TechWomen. Sitting on the Association of Countrywide Innovations Hubs board, Alice continues to influence and shape the future of technology and innovation nationwide. Her dedication to mentoring and nurturing junior employees has cultivated a culture of growth and effectiveness, contributing to a more dynamic and productive workplace. Her effective communication bridges the gap between tech enthusiasts and business professionals, while her love for documentation ensures that knowledge is shared and accessible. Advice from Alice: “In an industry where men predominate, women may face unique challenges. Embrace these as opportunities to showcase your strengths. Remember, mistakes are part of the journey. Take calculated risks and view setbacks as learning experiences. No CEO reached the top without trial and error. Overcome imposter syndrome, embrace new experiences, learn the norms, and shatter that glass ceiling.” As we celebrate Alice’s achievements, let’s carry her message of perseverance and innovation into June and beyond.
