Today the #Chips #Joint #Undertaking has announced the opening of calls to support chips R&I initiatives in #photonics, #competence #centres, and a #semiconductor cloud-based design #platform. Worth €325 million, this round of calls will further support Europe’s #microchips industry by establishing a #pilot #line for #photonic integrated circuits (PICs), a step forward for the next generation of high-performance computers, high-speed communications, and data centres. The #funding will also support the creation, roll-out and networking of 'chips competence centres’ in participating states. These competence centres will provide access to technical expertise and experimentation in #semiconductors, helping #companies, #SMEs in particular, to improve design capabilities and develop their skills.

EU invests €325 million to support Europe's semiconductor innovation ecosystem Today, the Chips Joint Undertaking (Chips JU) has announced the opening of calls to support semiconductor research and innovation initiatives in photonics, competence centres, and a cloud-based semiconductor design platform as part of the Chips for Europe initiative under the Chips Act. The total EU funding available for these calls is €325 million, which should be topped up by additional financing from participating states of the Chips JU. This new round of calls will further support Europe's semiconductor industry by establishing a pilot line for photonic integrated circuits (PICs). These semiconductors use light to process and transmit information at higher speeds while using less energy. This will be particularly important for the next generation of high-performance computers, high-speed communications and data centres. The funding will also support the creation, roll-out and networking of 'chips competence centres' in participating states. These competence centres will provide access to technical expertise and experimentation in semiconductors, helping companies, SMEs in particular, to improve design capabilities and develop their skills. Finally, the upcoming calls will fund a project to create a cloud-based online design platform that will allow users, particularly academia, start-ups and SMEs, to design and develop their new chips, and to help bring their designs to market. Industrial players and research organisations can apply for funding through the Funding and Tender Opportunities portal and the Chips JU website. The closing dates for proposals for the photonics pilot line, the competence centres, and the design platform are respectively on 17 September 2024, 2 October 2024, and 10 October 2024 – all at 17:00 CEST. Applicants can apply for funding through the Funding and Tender Opportunities portal and the Chips JU website. Exciting news for the UK semiconductor industry! The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology recently announced a significant boost to the UK semiconductor landscape with the allocation of £22 million to two new 'Innovation and Knowledge Centres (IKC).' These centres, receiving £11 million each, will spearhead the development and market integration of cutting-edge chip technologies. The investment is also strategically aligned with the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology's £1 billion semiconductor strategy, focusing on key areas of British leadership on the global stage: silicon photonics and compound chips. The Chips Joint Undertaking wants industrial players and research organisations to work on photonics (light-based data transmission), microchip competence centres and a cloud-based chip design platform. Participating member states are expected to top up the funding.

The EU aims to double its global market share in semiconductors to 20% by 2030 with the #EUChipsAct, facilitating investments. #Finland, active in this initiative, boasts a robust electronics and photonics sector employing 5,000 people and generating nearly two billion euros. Finnish expertise spans semiconductors, including sensors, #MEMS, and #photonics, attracting leading global companies. Specialization, particularly in telecommunications and MEMS, positions Finland as an EU leader in system circuit design. The "Chips from Finland" initiative aims to build a European semiconductor and quantum industry ecosystem. The new round of calls will further support Europe’s semiconductor industry by strengthening collaboration, reinforcing industrial competitiveness, and supporting the transfer of innovation from laboratories to SMEs and large enterprises. Although it might not be mentioned too frequently, Finland is playing a crucial role in promoting the EU Chips Act and strengthening Europe’s semiconductor competitiveness. For a small country, they have a well-developed semiconductor industry and relevant university research that attracts global leading companies to tap into their pool of high-level know-how. Finland strategy is clearly around the ‘non-digital’ technologies that enable real world digital processing systems to operate.
