There are times when a "National Day" makes me go ... huh? Well National Balloon Ascension day was one of those days. What the heck is National Balloon Ascension, because it's actually really dangerous to just let a whole bunch of balloons go into the ocean thing. For some reason this one got me caught up in the thoughts. What were those first aviation pioneers thinking? Man foot travel takes forever. Wouldn't it be great if we could travel not relying on animals? Fire keeps us so warm, but what else can it do? What happens above the flames? Can that be harnessed? Birds can fly, why can't we? Recently I heard a lady at a book club I was checking out say science fiction makes us wonder what is possible. In "Made to Stick" by Chip Heath he tells this story about the idea that was planted to Sony engineers to make the first walkman. Everything starts as a thought seed. Then with a group of ladies I meet with we were talking about how failure is really just a way to not do something. We get these ideas, we play it around in our heads, then we make a plan. We execute that plan, we learn, we adjust and we try again. I would love to know what ideas you are toying with, what plans you are making, what you are trying, where you are making adjustments. THE NEW MOBILITIES PARADIGM « Automobility impacts not only on local public spaces and opportunities for coming together, but also on the formation of gendered subjectivities, familial and social networks, spatially segregated urban neighbourhoods, national images and aspirations to modernity, and global relations ranging from transnational migration to terrorism and oil wars. The car is perhaps an obvious candidate for application of a more mobile perspective, but what if we were to open up all sites, places, and materialities to the mobilities that are always [and ] already coursing through them? Led by Professor Kareem Ahmed, our efforts are reshaping the future of air travel and space exploration. UCF's projects, like the High-Hypersonic Enthalpy Facility (HiHYPER), are driving advancements in materials, aerodynamics, and propulsion research. With a focus on hypersonic flight experiments and advanced fuel injector technology, our work is not only groundbreaking but also highly practical. As students, we're directly involved in these projects, gaining hands-on experience and contributing to cutting-edge research.
