Collaboration is key to transforming industry and meeting our #netzero goals for 2030 and 2050. I recently shared my views on the need to work together in the race against climate change.    CERAWeek – the annual energy conference that explores global energy trends and challenges – is the ideal platform to tackle the issue where it matters most.    During the “How to make net zero happen?” panel, hosted by Leanne Todd at S&P Global, we discussed how #digitalization and #sustainability are two sides of the same coin.    Technology is enabling industries to cut emissions and make significant efficiency gains, particularly important in hard-to-abate sectors. Beyond efficiency, we are making greater strides toward innovation in renewables, and also circularity and resilience. It was exciting to discuss some of the areas of innovation we see in our business, from #CCUS to #greenhydrogen.    We also touched on the role of #government support, like the US IRA stimulus, and the need for ethical and practical guardrails and increased funding for the AI landscape.      Thanks to my fellow panellists Lance Uggla, Bill Newsom and Paul Marsden for their invaluable insights.     It’s only through radical cross-border collaboration, information sharing and meaningful diverse partnerships that we can make sustainability in the industrial world work whilst still growing.

Here's why this matters: Ambitious targets drive innovation: Leaders are setting cost reduction goals 40% below current prices, pushing boundaries and fostering creativity. AI-powered R&D: Google DeepMind's deep learning has predicted structures for 2.2 million new materials, potentially revolutionizing solar cells and batteries. Supply chain integration is key: Tesla's vertical integration in lithium refining exemplifies efficient production and cost control. Design-to-value (DTV) yields massive savings: Electrolyzer manufacturers have identified up to 50% "should cost" savings on critical components. Capital expenditure excellence: One automotive company slashed CapEx by 75% while tripling design output. The urgency is clear: Green hydrogen production needs a 55% annual increase to meet 2030 net-zero goals. 🔥 Hot Take: These strategies aren't just cost-cutting measures; they're the catalysts for a sustainable future. Last week, Semafor held its 2024 World Economy Summit. I caught up with the interviews on YouTube a few days later. I found the opening dialogue with BCG Global Chair Rich Lesser on leadership, as well as the segments on industrial decarbonization and energy transition really interesting. GE Vernova CEO Scott Strazik and Semafor's Climate and Energy Editor, Tim McDonnell, had a great exchange over the future energy mix in Southeast Asia. It brought home to me the scope and velocity of the region’s transition from coal to gas powered energy. Despite #methane being 84 times more potent than CO2 at warming the atmosphere over 20 years, GE continues to see robust demand for gas turbines in Southeast Asia. GE attributes this to the limitations of regional grids, which necessitate localized, energy-dense solutions. Plus, the absence of sufficient green hydrogen production hubs on the back of coal's pervasiveness further complicates the transition to cleaner fuels, wind, and solar. (🐸 ribbit) Opportunity Risk model In February, the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) funded EEIST Project released a synthesis paper elevating a public policy model called "Opportunity Risk" as an alternative to traditional Cost Benefit Analysis for assessing investment decisions for breakthrough technologies. Essentially, Opportunity Risk analysis advocates for substantial, up-front investments in technologies that can lead to transformative impacts, rather than opting for cheaper, incremental solutions, with the expectation that costs will diminish relative to the significant benefits over time. GE’s perspective is not only shaped by the products it sells (fair enough) but also by traditional cost-benefit analysis. However, adopting a “good enough for now” mindset only further entrenches fossil fuels in the energy landscape. Rich Lesser (Boston Consulting Group (BCG)) emphasized that despite the need to reduce carbon emissions by 6-7% annually, emissions are still increasing by about 1% each year. Although the rate of increase has slowed, overall progress remains insufficient. Discussions at #G20 and other high-level forums talk about trillions of US dollars needed to abate carbon emissions across all sectors, and yet when opportunities to leapfrog surface, are we missing the lily pad. (🐸 ribbit) Purpose, policy, proceeds, and efficiency Considering the urgency of climate change and Asia's significant #GHG emissions, is switching from coal to gas the best strategy for these countries and the world? Shouldn't we be aiming to stand-up more radical solutions? To successfully leapfrog, we require bold policies, reliable solutions, and tailored funding mechanisms that cover the incremental costs beyond just the transition from coal to gas. This is a great space for public incentives, tradable assets, and risk transfer mechanisms that will allow demonstration projects to thrive.
