Great article by Pamela Danziger regarding the outlets and the growth of luxury brands expanding into the sector published by Forbes. Outlet centers in the United States have less luxury brands than outlet centers that I have visited in Europe and China. There is a myriad of reasons, but I am expecting to see that philosophy change in the near future. Research has clearly shown that luxury brands outlet stores serve as a gateway to expand their customer base. As noted in the article, since 2021, when inflation began to take hold, luxury outlet sales have climbed 35%, from $37 billion to $50 billion, making it the fastest-growing channel in the $387 billion (€362 billion) personal luxury goods market, according to Bain. When explaining the outlet sector to audiences that may not understand its strength, I share the following. Many shoppers are intimidated to go into the luxury stores on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Hop in a car and drive 100 miles to Desert Hills Premium Outlets (located close to Palm Springs) and the same Rodeo Drive retailers that have outlet stores in Desert Hills are packed with shoppers. The outlet sector has a tremendous future as it is the original DTC model. The consumer continues to affirm the strength of outlets and the performance of the brands is often staggering! Great example of launching Strategic and Brand Consistent entry-level luxury items from Goyard. The Luxury Brand has noticeably targeted the huge ($261 Billion) and growing (to reach $358.62 Billion by 2027) Pet Market - both a largely uncharted and less competitive territory for Luxury Brands. With the Global Luxury Pet Market expected to be worth $27 Billion by 2025, it seems that Goyard’s attempt to increase marketing and awareness through entry-level products, which tap into the heritage of leather Pet accessories dating back to the 1980’s, is a forward-thinking and effective strategy. The attempt at ‘Accessible Luxury’ is also a brilliant way to target a new, yet loyal, consumer who buys into the status of the Goyard and its Premium luxury items via the less costly product offering; capitalising off the Maison’s previous success with its other accessible portfolio items. In conclusion, the combination of a less competitive and flourishing market combined with a proven track record of success makes the Goyard Leashes, Bowls and Collars the perfect new selection. This morning Walpole launches an important study, Luxury in the Making. Not only does it show that British luxury is a high growth sector, having grown 69% to a value of £81bn in the five years since we last valued the sector, demonstrating its vital contribution to the U.K. economy, it also examines the intricate relationship between craft, materials, employment, supply chains and brands. Unquestionably, it demonstrates the singular strength of the UK's luxury sector. What's more, British luxury is on a trajectory that, with the right support and policies, will only grow further. We have quantifed for the first time the significant employment offered by the sector, at the heart of which is skilled work across hospitality, retail and manufacturing, supporting more than 450,000 jobs. Whilst the UK luxury sector is always focused on the future, both in innovation and growth, its foundation is rooted in its rich history, and brands are custodians of crafts and skills with an important heritage. As Walpole's Chief Executive l'm here to champion the people whose skills drive growth, from weavers in Scottish textile mills, leather specialists supplying our luxury automotive brands or the young people training in high-end hospitality: just a handful of the roles in a sector that accounted for more than one in ten jobs created in the UK between 2017 and 2022. This heritage, innovation and a relentless dedication to excellence give the British luxury sector international appeal, and in turn drive growth and employment.
