I didn't attend the HLTH conference this year; the past few years I have been I haven't found it to be very relevant to what I am focused on (how do we optimize healthcare with diagnostics, how can we bring diagnostics to the market) but I couldn't put my finger why I didn't find HLTH to be productive for me anymore. This article from the The Economist is what I couldn't quite put words to; so much 'innovation' in healthcare isn't solving an actual clinical problem, it's dealing with the middlemen. The middlemen in healthcare- insurers, PBMs, distributors, brokers- sit between patients and care. In 2022 the combined revenue of the nine biggest middlemen equated to nearly 45% of our healthcare tab in the US, up from 25% in 2013. They account for eight of the top 25 companies by revenue in the S&P 500 index of America’s leading stocks, compared with four for big tech and none for big pharma. This is why we spend 17% of our GDP in the US on healthcare (twice we much as other rich countries) but have a decling age expectancy. More problematic, because of the size of our healthcare probelm, actually fixing it would mean that a lot of people/companies who make a lot of money off the ineffencies will... make less.  This mentality is stifling actual innovation in clinical care. https://lnkd.in/ebHAmXj5 Thanks to J. Agree Hannah Mamuszka with your observation that “This mentality is stifling actual innovation in clinical care.” For years at the GTMRx Institute we have worked to introduce a practice level process of care called comprehensive medication management (CMM) which is a pharmacist-led person-centered, team-based, collaborative approach using clinical information (and diagnostics) & working WITH THE PHYSICIAN to optimize medication use (identifying misuse, underuse, overuse, or stopping therapies that are not working). Regardless of the evidence (and it is vast), adoption has been slowed or blocked because current business and payment models (yes, middleman vendors!) do not reward or pay for new services that create better care, lower costs, and higher provider and patient satisfaction. To deliver the best healthcare outcomes and experience, we depend on data that is accurate and reliable. Accessing quality data is both a great asset and incredible hurdle in the healthcare industry today.     In response to this timely issue, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield and other leading health plans collaborated with the Council for Affordable Quality Healthcare (CAQH) to detail tangible solutions and practical steps to universally enhance data quality.   As Chairman of the Board of CAQH, I am eager to see the benefits of this collaborative effort fully realized.
