In the 10 months to December 2023, six Nigerian companies stopped operations in the country due to its tough business environment. Lingering issues such as foreign exchange scarcity, inadequate power supply, port congestion, multiple taxation, insecurity, and deficient infrastructure have affected many businesses, especially in the manufacturing sector. Apart from the local companies, several foreign operators announced plans to exit Africa’s biggest economies last year. As we welcome 2024, Nigerians are counting the number of multinational companies (MNCs) exiting the country in 2023. Within the last ten months, at least five MNCs, including household names in Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) like GlaxoSmithKline Nigeria, Procter & Gamble, Unilever and Sanofi-Aventis Nigeria Limited, have decided to exit Nigeria by ending manufacturing operations in the country. The major reason cited by these MNCs for exiting the country borders on the harsh business environment. Available statistics on Nigeria’s business environment support this claim by the MNCs. The drive with Africa CDC to improve local manufacturing of pharmaceutical products in the #newpublichealthorder is being threatened by our lack of growth and rigidity in coming up with policies supporting local production of pharmaceuticals. Both the public and private sector need to work on areas of collaboration to have a well sized pharma market and promote procurement policies that favor the growth of the local industry

Establishing pharmaceutical companies in Africa is of enormous benefits as it helps to reduce high burden of infectious diseases (such as malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS) as well as a rising incidence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. This creates a substantial demand for a wide range of pharmaceutical products. Many African governments are reforming their healthcare regulations to make it easier for pharmaceutical companies to enter and operate within their markets. By leveraging these opportunities, Big Pharma can not only expand their global footprint but also contribute to improving healthcare standards in Africa, potentially leading to mutually beneficial outcomes that is beneficially to Africans.

Domestic African companies lucky enough to attract investment still face the same challenges that are driving the exit of big pharma. Ultimately, the fundamental issues that are deterring big pharma from maintaining their operations in Africa, such as unpredictable market conditions, infrastructural weaknesses and bureaucratic inefficiencies, also plague local manufacturers.  But there are interventions that governments should make to ease the situation for all manufacturing companies on the continent to enable this industry to develop sustainably.
