An unprecedented mpox outbreak has been taking place in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with the highest ever officially reported cases in history. But what sets this outbreak apart from the one that made headlines in 2022, it's that it's primarily driven by Clade I and its' concerning sublineage Clade Ib is spreading into new geographical territories. While Clade II is also expanding, Clade Ib can evade testing, can transmit through heterosexual networks, and the DRC has no approved vaccine. This leads to greater challenges in containment, as the region grapples with resource constraints and a wide geographic area. There's also the global consideration. In 2022, England became one of the first countries to experience local transmission outside of the African continent due in part to its high air travel connectivity. As of June 2024, BlueDot's air travel forecasting has identified these destinations as having the highest connectivity with DRC: 1️⃣ Belgium (Brussels Airport) 2️⃣ France (Paris Charles de Gaulle Airp) 3️⃣ South Africa (O.R. Tambo International Airport) 4️⃣ Burundi (Bujumbura) 5️⃣ UAE (Dubai) 6️⃣ Uganda (Entebbe) 7️⃣ Turkey (Istanbul) 8️⃣ India (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport) BlueDot's team continues to monitor the situation carefully.
