An unprecedented mpox outbreak has been taking place in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with the highest ever officially reported cases in history. But what sets this outbreak apart from the one that made headlines in 2022, it's that it's primarily driven by Clade I and its' concerning sublineage Clade Ib is spreading into new geographical territories. While Clade II is also expanding, Clade Ib can evade testing, can transmit through heterosexual networks, and the DRC has no approved vaccine. This leads to greater challenges in containment, as the region grapples with resource constraints and a wide geographic area. There's also the global consideration. In 2022, England became one of the first countries to experience local transmission outside of the African continent due in part to its high air travel connectivity. As of June 2024, BlueDot's air travel forecasting has identified these destinations as having the highest connectivity with DRC: 1️⃣ Belgium (Brussels Airport) 2️⃣ France (Paris Charles de Gaulle Airp) 3️⃣ South Africa (O.R. It has been now one week since Morocco suffered from one of its most heartbreaking natural disaster. It has impacted more than 200 000 vulnerable citizens who have seen, in less than 20 seconds, their homes, villages, roads severely damaged if not totally destroyed. They have also sadly witnessed the loss of too many family members, friends and neighbors…. May they Rest in Peace 🤲 Only few hours after this terrible shock, the entire Moroccan Nation has stand up, generously mobilized time and funding, get organized and thoroughly selected the international aid needed on the ground. All this amazing energy has been put into motion to provide to impacted citizens the necessary and basic urgent needs to survive in the first days. For sure, it is never enough given the massive impact of the earthquake but looking back at this week, it made me very proud, as a Moroccan, to have seen such mobilization, it means a lot for a country in those defining moments !! The strategic direction has now clearly been set, to not do just a rapid repair, but to engage into a complete Rebuild of the impacted regions that have been, for too long, put aside of Morocco’s socio-economic development agenda. The Rebuild journey needs to define a new and more sustainable model. It will take a mountain of efforts, will require massive funding mobilization (already well engaged) and years of challenges but it is needed… we owe it to the citizens living in those regions. This is the inclusive Morocco we are all aiming for !!
