LeadingAge leaders across the U.S., including LeadingAge Ohio's CEO/President Susan Wallace, recently weighed in on CMS's proposed staffing mandate "In Ohio, we see nonprofit and government-operated nursing facilities closing at a precipitous clip or aggressively reducing the amount of nursing home care they provide. Ohio alone has lost roughly 3,000 beds over the past two years. In most situations, there is no lack of demand, rather, a lack of workforce. The draft rule is simply out of touch with the reality of our sector.” Read more➡️ https://ow.ly/v7Ny50PTxy4

THIS WEEK is our 2nd Anniversary.. and we're #movingforward to deepen our work to empower residents, staff and communities. We will continue to be: 🌟 Focusing on the people in nursing homes. We have four projects underway being pilot tested in order for best practices to be promote nationally. These projects specifically empower residents to have control over their personal and community life, and #CNAs to grow in their career and nursing home roles. 👉 We'll be releasing a microsite later this week with "how to" guides. 🌟 Strengthening our voice for consensus of solutions. We're continuing to bring together diverse voices to identify solutions (big and small) we can all agree on. 👉 This week we'll have three consensus-backed federal policy recommendations to move forward with necessary shifts. 🌟 Seeking partners as we can't do it alone. 👉 We need help funding and scaling other promising projects to: incentivize household models, ensure surveyors have training in person-centered care, and make person-centered care planning a part of nursing home electronic health records. Can you introduce us? WANT TO LEARN MORE? 👉 We've got a great group assembled THIS Wednesday, June 26 (4-5pm ET) to learn more of what's ahead. As a nursing leader in post-acute care, it is important to be proactive and listen to your patients. Building relationships before discharge is critical. Remember, you don't have to be a "born leader" to become one. It takes work and continuous learning. Here are five caring essentials to lead your staff effectively. 1) Maintain a clinical presence. 2) Listening, respecting and facilitating dialogue. 3) Establish affirming relationships. 4) Build the strength to persist. 5) Balancing limited resources. Join us in celebrating Deke Cateau for being an honoree in 2024 McKnight’s Pinnacle Awards! The awards recognize industry veterans with at least 20 years of experience in their chosen field. The program is a joint effort of McKnight’s Long-Term Care News, McKnight’s Senior Living and McKnight’s Home Care. Here's what Deke had to say about the honor: What does being recognized as a McKnight's Pinnacle Award honoree mean to you? I hope that my receiving this award will shine a positive light on nursing homes and the long-term care sector. Our sector has always been more heavily scrutinized and not always treated favorably, especially during the height of the pandemic. But I hope that this recognition will showcase the great work and innovation being done in nursing homes across the nation by the many providers and countless direct caregivers who deserve our resources and support. I am honored to represent them. What is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned from working in your field? The most valuable lesson I have learned is resilience. Those in our sector face constant changes in regulations, payment streams, and legal scrutiny. Yet somehow we manage to remain resilient and adapt – and in many ways, even improve! I also think that caring for and learning from our nation’s seniors – who are part of one of the most resilient generations – has taught me to stand up to adversity of all kinds and face it with a positive mindset. What advice would you give potential future honorees? My advice would be to always lead with your passion. Passion for the work that we do is what will spur innovation and fresh ideas – and lead to true change. Passion will also allow you to not be afraid to show and admit to the vulnerabilities – emotional and otherwise – that we all have and will help us to have deeper and more meaningful relationships with our elders and the staff that we lead. #MCKPinnacleAwards

Work Systems & Human Factors Engineer | Consultant & Educator | Specializing in health-promoting job design, inclusive system change, organizational change-readiness, healthy organizational culture
Dr Leap describes the broken system, and although nothing quick can fix it, I love where he finds hope, for this is where I find hope too: “However, it may be that our greatest hope for the future lies not in AI or clinical decision rules, not in bedside devices or new drugs, but in the people who come back over and over to do the hard work of emergency medicine, even as they might love to love something else as much but can't.” We need to recreate our healthcare system, and all the roles within it. The only way to do that effectively is to invite and honor the expertise of healthcare professionals. Other types of professional expertise (ie, finance, engineering, technology, HR, facilities, etc) have their roles to play, but it must be in support of the healing process. If these supportive processes shape the system, they will deform it. (They have deformed it.)

It takes a village.... One of the most important things we impress upon our clinicians is.... Every nursing home is its own little village. They have different challenges. Different Strengths. Different Weaknesses. Different Dynamics. And what works for great for 1 facility, might be a disaster for another. So....yes, we do have systems and processes in place, we do have a playbook for how we will maximize reimbursement and compliance for our clients. But.....before implementing any change, we first listen to the Team at the facility. Because....its their village. They know it best. And once we feel we understand their facility, we can collaborate on how best to apply our systems and processes, to their unique needs. In the words of Sean Covey - "First seek to understand, then to be understood" .
