What size should your pitch deck be at Seed? 👇

Some of the top cliche phrases to avoid in a pitch: Because 95% of the hundreds of pitches I reviewed this month used them & it has the opposite effect of what you’d think… ❌ “and we’re just getting started” ❌ “we are in an underserved market” ❌ “there is endless potential” ❌ “there’s huge upside” ❌ “we’ve made major traction” ❌ “we’ve developed a simple solution” Instead of saying the above - use facts and KPIs to prove it For example - instead of “we’ve made major traction” - think about it like this: ✅ “over (insert time frame), we’ve accomplished (insert quantifiable metrics) that has allowed us to (insert specific learnings or growth).” So an investor feels/believes you’ve made traction without the fluffy language. (Something Riley Decker did an incredible job of during her recent pitch win!!)

I was in the pit duking it out with 3 worthy adversaries. This was no gladiator pit with swords drawn…but rather our words and wits were the weapons of choice. This was the Profit Pit, a pitch competition for innovative business ideas with a $1,000 investment for the winner. As a presentation coach, I had to put my skills to the test. What better opportunity to practice what I preach and deliver a memorable pitch? I was the last speaker to go and I had 5 minutes.  This was after an 8-hour day of learning, with a tired audience ready to retreat to their hotel rooms for a nap! The cards were stacked against me… But I was ready for this and had a few cards up my sleeve (actually, I had a whole deck that I handed out to the judges so they could see, touch and feel the product). What helped to seal the deal? Here are my #PowerPointers: 👉 Open strong by piquing curiosity. 👉 Bring energy and excitement to your presentation. 👉 End strong with a memorable catchphrase that will arouse emotions. Was it perfect? No. Did I make mistakes? Absolutely. But it didn’t matter in the end. Because the message stuck, and I got the buy-in from the investors.
