OMD’s performance led RECMA to declare that “OMD has no direct competitor today” among global media agency networks. OMD has once again been named the best performing global media network in RECMA’s Diagnostics report for the sixth consecutive edition and has widened its lead over its nearest competitor to a historic level. OMD’s performance led RECMA to declare that “OMD has no direct competitor today” among global media agency networks. In the region, OMD APAC has retained the #2 spot in the overall diagnostics report for Asia Pacific (up from #6 in 2020); has the best performance in compitches over the last 3 years; is #2 in digital, data, and tech expertise; and is #2 in vitality (up from 3 in the last edition and closing the gap to the top spot). 🚨🚨 Very interesting view of the broader marketing services market in this post from the latest big #agency holdco quarterly updates. The findings make for eye opening reading for EVERY agency leader.... 🧐 Why? Because it points to the commoditisation of many of the services that you may be offering. But it also offers an interesting opportunity, so let me explain. 📉 Reading the post you'll learn quickly that the WPPs, Dentsu, Publicis and IPGs of this world are not ALL growing. In fact it is only really Publicis and Dentsu bucking the trend, proving that growth IS possible right now. 📈 But how are they doing it? In simple terms they are 'giving away market services' in order to win lucrative paid media accounts. 🧠 That may bring you out in cold sweats as an agency leader offering such services, but it also paints a path to growth. 🤔 Whilst at the very top they are using this technique to win £100m+ media accounts you can scale down that model to win too. 💥 There model you see is simple - they know that a £100m media budget will see them receive kick backs from the media owners and they'll also make margin on delivery of that budget too, so by simply offering £100k of marketing services such as SEO or PR they can easily lose that in the mix. 🆓 And so next time you think about how to win a competitive pitch look at how a similar pricing strategy may help you; can you give away something to win the wider business? 🎁 Could you price in an extra 10% of content provision to win that lucrative social opportunity? Could you include free TikTok creative for their channel to win a design brief? There was a lot of big agency news last week. Let’s get command of it all. 📊 The AdAge agency report 2024 came out. Revenue for the world’s 30 biggest agency companies rose 5.6% in 2023. However, the average organic growth for WPP, Publicis, Omnicom, Interpublic, and Dentsu was just 1.3% - down from 7.5% in 2022. Look for more consolidation as the biggest agencies seek acquisition targets for strategic growth. In fact, among the 22 top agencies in that inaugural 1954 report, 18 have disappeared through agency consolidation and closings. Nothing lasts forever. 🌐 The talent pool is quite large and diverse right now, which should spawn new shops built to service the modern demands of brand marketers … and their budget realities.  Look at the General Motors agency roster shakeup (creative, content, and CRM). The CMO framed the new structure as a “constellation” of agencies, suggesting GM can “flex” assignments as needed, moving away from the traditional AOR structures. 🇫🇷 By all accounts, creators took over campaigns at Cannes this year. Of course, AI and sports were everywhere, but so were the media and technology companies courting ad dollars. Has Cannes become less about the work and more about who you work over at the festival? I wish we saw more about the award-winning campaigns than all the party dispatches. There are more significant problems to solve in this industry than who to pick as your pickleball partner. Then again, if you’re good at the sport, it might lead to some future business. That’s an expensive game to play.

The diagnostics report is based on the evaluation of 676 agencies in 45 markets. Utilizing 19 KPIs to evaluate vitality and structure, the report offers a marketing index that goes beyond quantitative metrics such as activity volume or financial results. Participating agencies are ranked both numerically and by the following categories: Dominant, High Profile, Very Good Profile, Good Profile and Average Profile. A breakdown of the global ranking shows OMD ranks as the best performing agency in North America, EMEA, Central East Europe and the Nordics; and is Dominant in 10 markets, including Australia, Germany, Greece, Italy, New Zealand, Peru, Sweden, Turkey, the UK, and the USA. The report also reveals OMD is the agency of choice for the region's biggest advertisers across North America, EMEA and APAC, and is ranked #1 for new business balance over one year; digital, data and content resources; and is the most homogenous network in terms of its rankings across regions. The traditional agency ecosystem is having to reinvent itself. New research from the WFA and global media advisors, MediaSense shows an overwhelming proportion of major multinational brands looking to improve their agency model with just 11% of respondents believing their current agency model fits their future needs, while 24% believe it is unfit for future purpose. The Future of Media Agency Models report, which is based on a survey of more than 70 multinational companies representing in excess of $50 billion in ad spend, shows that the traditional holding groups will still have their role to play. Thanks to the breadth and depth of their offerings, as well as their ability to integrate all marketing disciplines, Established Holding Companies clearly add value for clients and are the principal model being used by respondents to the survey.
