#motivationmonday Last Friday, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) announced the 2024 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count results. LA County's homeless population dipped slightly to 75,312 in 2024 (down 0.27%), while the City of LA saw a bigger decrease to 45,252 (down 2.2%). While officials were cautiously optimistic about the results, they noted that one year of numbers moving in the right direction is insufficient to say the LA region has turned a corner in addressing homelessness. #newtrend #CasaMilagrosa #DepaulUSALA #Charity1633 #homelessnesshasnoplace

🚨New government figures show 79,840 households faced homelessness in England between January and March 2023 - the highest number on record. ⚠️ So let's take a look further👇 In Scotland, there were 32,242 homeless households recorded in 2022/23, which accounts for 36,848 adults and 16,263 children. In Wales, 12,537 households were assessed as homeless or owed a duty by local authorities to help them secure accommodation between April 2022 and March 2023. A total of 10,872 individuals were also reported to be in temporary accommodation in Wales during May 2023. In Northern Ireland, official statistics show 7,478 households presented as homeless between July and December 2022, with a further 3,945 living in temporary accommodation. In England, another 296,180 households were owed a homelessness duty over 2022/23, meaning local authorities have a duty to prevent them from becoming homeless. Overall, Crisis estimated that around 227,000 people were experiencing the worst forms of homelessness – rough sleeping, sleeping in vans and sheds, and stuck in B&Bs – across England, Scotland and Wales in 2021. That figure is projected to rise beyond 300,000 households on any given night in 2023. #homeless #homelesscharity #endhomelessness #supportedhousing #housinguk #investorsneeded #christianchurch #UKHousingCrisis

On the front-page 🗞️ Diversion is one tool in our homeless response toolkit. Diversion specialists work closely with newly unhoused neighbors to immediately access safe alternative housing options. The Dallas Morning News wrote, "Sarah Kahn, President and CEO of Housing Forward, said the 12% drop in homelessness year-over-year can partly be attributed to proven diversion programs. These initiatives keep people off the streets by helping them find alternative housing quickly, Kahn said. Between April 2023 and May 2024, 3,173 individuals and 1,781 households were successfully diverted from homelessness in Dallas and Collin counties, according to Housing Forward data. More than 60% of successful diversions were households with children." Read all about it - https://lnkd.in/g8PMFmTF #endhomelessness #Diversion #HousingForward

Friday #FoodForThought - Is Transitional Housing a key piece in helping homelessness? Transitional housing, as an approach, has long been seen as part of the housing continuum for people who are homeless, and in particular for sub-populations such as youth. homeslesshub.ca says, in recent years it has become somewhat controversial, particularly in light of the success of Housing First models, which do not require ‘readiness’ for a transition. Eberle Planning and Research identified two key concerns: "1) Transitional programs reward those who do well by requiring them to move on; and 2) They can only be effective if affordable independent housing is available to move to afterwards”. We are in a place where we know action needs to happen. Want to help? Numbers of homeless neighbours in Toronto's emergency departments have surged. This data underscores the critical need for comprehensive solutions to address homelessness in our city. At Yonge Street Mission, we remain committed to supporting vulnerable neighbours through our 100+ wrap-around programs. Chronic homelessness is described as anyone remaining without a permanent home for 12 or more months or for extended periods over three or more years. About 30% of people without homes are experiencing it, according to U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Annual Homelessness Assessment Report released earlier this year. The #MNLeg's investment of nearly $1 billion toward housing could reduce the number of people in the state experiencing chronic homelessness as transitional and affordable housing is expected to increase. New affordable homes and apartments may take a while to build, but homelessness is being addressed. See key takeaways from HUD's assessment at tinyurl.com/mw98acs4. #MinnCAP #CommunityAction #BeCommunityAction #Advocacy #AdvocacyWorks #FightingPoverty #Nonprofit #ChronicHomelessness #Homelessness #Housing #AffordableHousing #HelpingPeople #ChangingLives

New analysis for Homelessness Australia has revealed the number of people seeking support from homelessness services has spiked 7.5% from December 2022 to March 2023. Alarmingly, three in four people using homelessness services in March 2023 were women or children. Women also had the biggest increases in homelessness services use between December 2022 and March 2023, with older women recording the highest increases in use of services. We need more funding for homelessness services – especially for services dedicated to supporting women, gender diverse people and people in their care, like what YWCA provides. Women are facing the brunt of this housing crisis. We need big investment to ensure all women have a safe, secure place to call home. Read the full analysis here: https://lnkd.in/geHDv_-E

Campaign Coordinator at Focus Ireland, National Spokesperson for SPARK . Chairperson of the board of Treoir.
The recent homelessness data is alarming, revealing a 16.37% increase in homelessness among lone parent households since March 2023. There has been an increase of 200 families in emergency accommodation, with lone parent families accounting for 147 of them. Shockingly, 357 additional children have become homeless over the last 4 months. It's crucial to convene a task force immediately to identify the causes and propose solutions for this wholly unacceptable increase in homelessness for lone parent households and children. #Homelessness #LoneParentHouseholds #EmergencyAccommodation #ChildrenInNeed
