Let’s talk about speaking on PANELS: I often get clients that have been asked to speak on panels. This is different to usual keynote speeches as you will be asked random questions by the presenter and/or audience & therefore the fear of the unknown is greater. How can you deal with being asked difficult questions? 1. Take your time Do not rush your answer! Simple ways to buy time are to repeat the end of the question, say “hah, good question!”, sip some water or simply pause. A rushed answer is never a good idea. 2. Use the PEP framework Tell us your Point, the Explain your point (ideally using a personal story) and most importantly repeat the initial Point after your explanation. People are more likely to remember something if it’s repeated so re-mentioning your point is crucial. 3. Be real If you are on a panel, people believe you have something to say. There is no right or wrong answer if you are speaking from your personal experiences. Let us known how you’ve come up with your ideas by being real & telling your audbeinxe what experiences you went through to mould your thinking. There you have it! I see a lot of "experts" on this platform. Some of them ... hm. I wonder. How do you know if you're an expert? I have two ways you can check! First is a two-part test: 1. Do any professional organizations or respected sources refer to you for your expertise? Oh ... nobody who matters asks for your opinion? You're just standing on a street corner saying stuff? Hm. 2. How do other people introduce you when you speak to a group? Oh, you don't speak to any groups? Ever? Hm. If you didn't pass those prongs, never fear! Second test: Have you ever served as an expert witness in a trial? If the answer is "yes," then you are absolutely an expert, because a judge and opposing counsel said you are. If you see a trend here, you're right! Being an expert is like being funny, or being an *sshole ... your opinion of how you're presenting yourself doesn't matter nearly as much as what other people think of you.

As an entrepreneur, it's good practice to directly interact with customers, says Arindam Paul, Founding Member and Chief Business Officer at Atomberg Technologies Private Limited. A lot of emotional and non-verbal thought processes influence buying behaviour, but they are not captured in commissioned market research, he says. A pause before a forced answer, laughter or a smile, leaning back or forward are essential to notice, as they will never be captured in a transcript, Paul adds. Good panel events vs Bad panel events on Diversity related issues. (I wish someone would do this!) — Good : There to promote ideas Bad : There to promote themselves — Good : Deep expertise with in-depth knowledge Bad : Little expertise with superficial knowledge — Good : Ad hoc questions with insightful answers Bad : Planted questions with rehearsed answers — Good : Relevant issues of interest Bad : Issues easily solved by google search — I’ve been on some great panels. I’ve attended some really poor ones. I haven’t been to a panel event for years. (Spot the grainy picture) No one invites me anymore. I wonder why. 🤔 PS.
