One of the most interesting dynamics in private investment recruiting is when candidates say over and over, “I only want PE in New York.” Then 4 months later that candidate takes a hedge fund job in Miami. It’s ok to tell the recruiter you work with your real parameters related to positions and geography. Maybe that recruiter has a hedge fund position in New York or a better hedge fund position in Miami. They can’t help you if you don’t tell them what you would consider.

Reading yesterday's Nishant Kumar's Bloomberg article and the quote “more than 3000 hedge funds have shut in the past 5 years” and contrasting that with the fact that worldwide industry AUM has jumped from $2.878tn in 2018 To $5.138tn (Statista data) end of 2023 got us thinking on how consolidation is impacting H.W. Anderson's hedge fund teams recruitment. Our 3 most recent PM placements had 4 things in common. 1. They had all been at multi billion dollar funds that had experience significant AUM growth over the last years and were disconnected from founders/leadership they were previously close to. 2. They had each told us initially they weren't interested in “pod shops.” 3. They all weighed up the option of starting their own fund/getting seeded (through our relationships) versus joining an established fund. 4. They ultimately chose leading multi strats based on the quality of tech infrastructure, analytical support, risk systems and availability of capital that would be too hard to match elsewhere. Just highlights how difficult it is to compete for top PM talent without significant scale. I think if you are starting a fund you need to consider your approach to talent as paramount. Cut a deal with an elite headhunter like H.W. Pershing square holdings a hedge fund follows a beautiful strategy, its unique, smooth and multifaceted. Investment thesis: At a point in time they are invested only in 8 firms, which are publicly listed and this number does not change, they believe in having less people tracking opportunities and maintaining the number of 8. Strategy for portfolio firms: They invest in highly profitable, cash flow generating and competitive businesess. Strategy for black swan opportunities: PS takes long short positions on big multiple billion dollar opportunities once in 2 3 years if they see a major mispricing or gap in the public markets. Strategy to hedge: Interest rate derivatives and equity derivatives of portfolio firms to hedge time oriented risks. Strategy for asset diversification: Investing in global macro fixed income as a means to maintain investor hurdles. So the equity gives agressive return, the fixed income gives the sleep well at night returns and derivatives help them hedge daily risks.
