There I said it, I said poop on LinkedIn, but you also clicked on this post so we're both guilty of a little potty humor. Now that I have your attention, I want to tell you about an experience I had years ago with my boss, Jason Love.
We had recently read a book called the Dog Poop Initiative. To summarize, there is a dog who unfortunately needs to relieve himself on a soccer field. The dog and its owner are the poopers, they made the mess and just left it. Rude! Overtime, there were pointers. People who saw the mess, maybe even alerted others to it, but in the end did nothing to clean it up. Finally, after much pooping and pointing, someone came in and cleaned up the mess, they are the scooper, the hero of the story.
Fast forward a few weeks later….this story continues to stay gross, hang in there. In one of the stairwells at work some friends and I noticed a nasty booger, yes a booger, smeared on one of the walls. We saw it, gaged, talked about it for weeks, and even avoided the stairwell altogether.
One day Jason took us to lunch. With him in the lead and us following close behind, he went straight to the dreaded stairwell! Gasp. "Jas, you probably don't want to go this way. Haven't you seen how gross it is?" We then explained the debacle and suggested we go another way.
Right then and there, Jason looked at us and said, "Hold on, stay here for a minute." He ran out the door and came back with a wet paper towel and a knife. Yes a knife. Without hesitation, he went straight to the booger and cleaned the spot, which I might add was no easy feat. As he scrubbed and cleaned, we all stood there firstly feeling really dumb we didn't take care of it ourselves and also realizing the important lesson we were just given.
Jason was the hero of the story, the scooper and we were all the pointers.
That lesson has stuck with me and I think about it often. How often do I sit in the pointer role? How often am I the scooper? Am I the pooper? What I love about this story and lesson is how it applies to me professionally and personally. From dishes, to taking out the trash, having a difficult conversation, completing a task, and yes if your dog poops on a soccer field, making sure it gets cleaned up right away.
It may take a little more effort, but be a scooper, the pointers and poopers will learn from you soon enough.
